이슬람을 어떻게 이해해야 하는지에 대한 질문은 오늘날 그리스도의 교회가 직면하고 있는 커다란 도전 가운데 하나이지만 기독교의 전통으로부터 오는 암시를 통해서 배울 수 있다. 전 세계이슬람 인구는 1930년에 2억 3백만 명이었으나 매년 2.32% 증가하여 2020년에는 16억 명이 되었다. 이슬람 인구가 2억 4백만 명이었을 때는 매년 평균 4-5백만 명 정도로 증가했지만 16억 명이 되는 지금은 매년 3700만 명이 성장하고 있다. 한국에서도 이슬람 인구는 빠르게 증가하고 있다. 한국에 이슬람 인구가 얼마인지 정확하게는 알 수 없지만, 박성수의 연구에 의하면 한국에서 이슬람으로 개종하는 사람들의 73%가 기독교인들이다. 따라서 한국교회가 이슬람에 대한 대안을 제시해야 한다. 이슬람에 대한 대안을 제시하기 위해서는 이슬람이 어떤 종교인지에 대한 이해가 시급하다. 한국에서는 이슬람을 타 종교로 인식하지만, 오랫동안 이슬람과 역사를 함께했던 비잔틴 제국에서는 이슬람을 기독교 이단으로 여겼다. 또한 마르틴 루터(Martin Luther), 존 칼빈(John Calvin), 하인리히 불링거(Heinrich Bullinger)와 같은 종교개혁자들도 이슬람을 기독교 이단으로 보았다. 이러한 주제를 다루면서 먼저 이슬람에 대한 외부자의 시각과 내부자의 시각을 살펴보고, 이슬람의 탄생 배경과 이슬람의 예언자 무함마드의 생애에 영향을 준 기독교, 그리고 아라비아반도를 둘러싼 기독교의 역사적, 신학적인 배경을 살펴보고자 한다. 그리고 이슬람이 기독교적 배경에 의하여 형성된 종교임을 밝히고 이슬람을 연구하는 이들에게 분별의 척도를 세우고자 한다.
How to understand Islam is one of the big challenges that today’s church is facing, but this can be learned through implications from the Christian tradition. In 1930, the total Muslim population in the world was 203 million but reached 1.6 billion in 2020 by increasing 2.32% each year. The number rose approximately 4-5 million on average every year when it was about 204 million. However, the increasing number per year has turned to 37 million now when the Muslim people are 16 billion in the world. This increasing trend in the Muslim population has no difference in Korea. The exact number of Muslim people in Korea are unknown, but 73% of the Muslim convert in Korea are from Christianity according to a study by Sungsu Park. Therefore, this is a call for Korean Church to suggest an alternative solution for Islam. To do this, an understanding of the Islamic religion is urgent. In Korea, Islam is seen as a type of religion other than Christianity while it was considered a heresy of Christianity in the Byzantine Empire that lived a long history along with Islam. Also, religious reformers including Martin Luther, John Calvin, and Heinrich Bullinger regarded Islam as a heresy. Along with this topic, this study is going to examine both aspects from Muslims and non-Muslims first on Islam first, then the historical background of Islam and Christianity that influenced the life of Muhammad, the Muslim prophet, and the historical and mythical background of Christianity in the Arabian Peninsular. Furthermore, this study aims to clarify that Islam religion was formed in the Judaism-Christianity background and to establish a way of discernment for people studying Islam.
