스미스와 몰도반에 따르면 ‘논증은 행위가 아니며 추상적 대상이다’. 필자는 이 주장에 동의한다. 이를 위해 그들이 제시한 논증 개념에 대한 패터슨의 반론이 성공적이지 않음을 보일 것이다. 그 과정에서 그들이 언급한 ‘의도’ 개념을 보다 분명히 나타낼 것이다. 끝으로 그 이해를 토대로 이른바 ‘의도 기준’을 옹호하는 주장을 비판적으로 검토할 것이다.
In “Arguments as abstract object”, Paul Simmard-Smith and Andrei Moldovan claim that arguments are not actions, but abstract objects. Steven Patterson criticizes Simmard-Smith and Moldovan’s account of arguments found in their paper. The purpose of this paper is to show that Patterson’s criticism is not successful. For this purpose, I argue that Patterson’s criticism is based on misunderstandings of their concept of ‘argument’. And I present an alternative account of arguments. In closing, on the basis of it, I critically examine the so-called ‘intention criterion’ thesis.
