최근 주목받고 있는 공공역사(public history)는 역사서술과 재현이 이루어지는 사회 영역에 대한 논의이다. 대학, 학계의 전문 학술 성과 (academic history)와 대비되는 개념으로서 대학, 연구소, 학회 등 전문 학술연구 영역과 그 외부에서 일어나는 역사 지식의 공적 활용에 관한 형식 총체를 말한다. 그 가운데 대학박물관은 전문적 역사학 연구의 영역과 더 넓은 공공 영역이 만나는 접점으로서 전문적 학술연구의 성과가 외부로 확산되기에 용이한 내용적, 공간적 우수성을 가지고 있다. 인문도시 사업은 한국연구재단의 인문학 지원 사업의 하나로서 2010년대 인문학 대중화 사업의 흐름을 선도하고 있는 국책 지원 사업이다. 인문도시 사업은 대학의 인문 학술 역량을 사회에 확산하는데 목적이 있다. 연세대학교 원주박물관은 2015년 강원도 원주시를 무대로 하여 인문도시 사업에 선정되었고 2018년까지 총 3년간 사업을 수행하였다. 3년의 기간 동안 원주시에 소재한 문화, 사회 단체와의 폭넓은 교류를 바탕으로 매년 100강좌 가량의 인문강좌를 시행하였고 연구재단이 지정한 인문주간 행사를 비롯하여 시민, 청소년을 대상으로 한 축제와 전시회 등 문화행사를 수차례 개최하였다. 3년간 직, 간접적으로 본 사업에 참여한 사회, 문화단체는 26개 단체에 이르렀다. 공공역사의 주체가 대학, 학술연구공간을 넘어선 다양성과 개방성을 지칭하는 것이라면 대학박물관으로서 주관한 인문도시사업은 사업주체가 대학이라는 점에서 공공역사 담론 생성 이전의 전통적인 공적 역사서술재현형식의 형식과 유사하지만 내용적으로는 다른 양상을 보였다. ‘인문도시 원주’ 사업은 ‘공공역사’ 담론의 실천적 의미로서 그에 부합하는 요소를 가지고 있었다. 역사서술재현의 형식으로 볼 때 권위적인 대학이 사회를 일방적으로 계몽하는 방식을 넘어서 지역의 역사 주체들과 호흡하며 함께 고민하고 나누었던 ‘역사하기’ 형식을 적용하였다. 따라서 ‘공공역사’가 가진 ‘공공’, ‘공중’, ‘공유’를 바탕으로 한 ‘생산’의 개념에 부합한다고 볼 수 있을 것이다.
Public history, which has recently been attracting attention, is a discussion about the social domain in which historical descriptions and representations take place. As a concept that contrasts with academic history of universities and academia, it refers to the totality of formalities related to the public use of historical knowledge that occurs outside of professional academic research areas such as universities, research institutes, and academic societies. Among them, university museums have content and spatial excellence that facilitates the spread of professional academic research results as a contact point between the realm of professional historical research and the wider public realm. The Humanities City project is one of the humanities support projects of the National Research Foundation of Korea, and it is a national support project that is leading the flow of humanities popularization projects in the 2010s. The Humanities City project aims to spread the university's humanities and academic capabilities to society. Yonsei University Wonju Museum was selected for the Humanities City project in Wonju-si, Gangwon-do in 2015, and carried out the project for a total of three years until 2018. For three years, based on wide exchanges with cultural and social groups located in Wonju-si, about 100 humanities lectures were held every year. Several cultural events were held. The number of social and cultural organizations that directly or indirectly participated in this project for three years reached 26. Considering the subject of public history as a being with diversity and openness beyond universities and academic research spaces, the Humanities City Project hosted by the Wonju Museum of Yonsei University is a traditional public historical narrative prior to the creation of public history discourse in that the subject of the project is a university. Formally, it was similar to the method of representation, but it showed a different aspect in content. The 'Humanities City Wonju' project had elements that correspond to the practical meaning of the 'public history' discourse. In terms of the form of reproducing historical narratives, the format of ‘doing history’, which was shared with local historical subjects, was applied beyond the method of unilaterally enlightening society by an authoritative university. Therefore, it can be seen that it fits the concept of ‘production’ based on ‘public’, ‘public’, and ‘sharing’ of ‘public history’.
