본 논문에서는 고유명의 의미론적 지시체가 어떻게 결정되는지를 설명하는 지칭 이론이 기존의 인과적-역사적 지칭 이론의 대안으로서 제안된다. 에반스의 논의를 바탕으로 재구축된 이 대안적 이론에서 중심적인 설명적 역할을 담당하는 것은 이름사용관행이며, 이러한 이론을 ‘이름사용관행 중심 이론’이라고 부를 수 있다. 이름사용관행 중심 이론은 명명식이나 인과적-역사적 연쇄와 같은 요소들에 의존하지 않으며, 이름 사용의 관행에 참여하는 생산자와 소비자에 관한 일군의 사실들을 바탕으로 고유명의 지칭 결정을 설명한다. 이러한 설명의 과정에서 이름사용관행 중심 이론이 인과적-역사적 지칭 이론과 비교할 때 어떤 상대적 장점을 지니는지 역시 설명될 것이다.
In this paper, a theory explaining how the semantic referent of a proper name is determined is proposed as an alternative to the causal-historical theory of reference. The notion of a name-using practice is at the center of the suggested theory reconstructed from Evans’ discussion on reference-determination. This theory, which can be called ‘a name-using-practice-based theory’, dispenses with initial baptisms and causal-historical chains in which the causal-historical theory consists. Rather, the former appeals to the facts and properties about the producers and consumers who participate in a name-using practice. Additionally, from the exposition of the theory, its advantage over the causal-historical theory is derived.
