본 연구는 최근 국내외에서 높은 시청률을 보이며 화제를 불러온 TV 드라마 <이상한 변호사 우영 우>의 서사가 장애인을 주인공으로 한 기존 미디어 텍스트와 어떤 차이를 보이는지 밝히고 그것이 가지는 함의를 논의하고자 하였다. 분석 결과, 드라마 <이상한 변호사 우영우>는 기존 장애 서사가 장애를 극복한 개인의 영웅담을 다루거나 가족의 희생 등에 집중해 장애인을 의존적 존재로 재현 했던 것과 달리 자폐 스펙트럼 장애가 있는 변호사 우영우를 대형 로펌과 법정이라는 사회적 맥락 안으로 끌어들여 그가 독립적인 사회 주체로서 활약하는 과정과 동료 변호사나 다른 사회적 소수 자들과의 관계를 조명하였다. 이는 장애인의 삶을 저해하는 요인이 개인이 가진 장애 자체라기보 다는 그들을 수용하지 못하는 차별적 인식과 사회 환경 등에 있다는 것을 말해 준다. 또 비장애인의 입장에서 ‘말해지는’ 자로 소외되고 타자화되었던 재현방식에서 벗어나 장애를 가진 주인공 우영 우가 직접 화자가 되어 ‘자기변호(self-advocacy)’를 하는 진전된 서사를 보여주었다. 궁극적으로 드라마 <이상한 변호사 우영우>는 향후 미디어의 바람직한 장애 재현방식은 물론 우리 사회가 장애인을 어떻게 수용해야 할지 그 방향성을 제시해 준다. 이 연구는 미디어 연구와 장애 연구 분야의 학제 간 연구를 통해 미디어의 장애 재현에 대한 보다 심층적인 설명과 장애 인식 개선을 위한 두터운 논의를 제공했다는 점에서 의의가 있다.
This study investigated how the television series <Extraordinary Attorney Woo> represented a person with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), in comparison with prior media texts in which the main characters were people with disabilities. The result shows <Extraordinary Attorney Woo>, contrary to the narratives of other similar films or television series, does not portraits a person with disabilities as a hero who fiercely conquests the obstacles or fatefully relies on her family. Rather, it represents the character with disability as an independent person who can pave the way for her professional life in social contexts taking place at a major law firm and courtrooms. Being a person with disability and a gifted lawyer with sheer memory, Woo advocates for social minorities like her. By telling those stories, the drama manifests it is not disability itself that hinders the person’s self actualization but handicaps derived from the perspectives and environments of the society. Also, in comparison with other media texts which described people with disabilities as “subalterns” who are to be spoken by others, the attorney Woo was represented as a self-advocate person. This series suggests how Korean society and its people should respond to people with disabilities.
