<크루엘라(Cruella)>는 융 분석심리학의 핵심인 개성화(Individuation) 과정을 풍부하게 형상화한 영화이다. 융에 따르면 개성화는 의식적 삶의 중심인 자아(Ego)가 무의식의 요소들을 통합해나가면서 자기(Self)의 전일성을 회복하는 과정을 뜻한다. 개성화는 우선 자아의 어두운 인격인 그림자(Shadow)를 동화하고 개인무의식의 요소인 콤플렉스(Complex)들을 인식하는 가운데, 이와 결부된 집단무의식의 원형들을 의식화하는 과정으로 이루어진다. 이를 통해 개성화는 궁극적으로 ‘자율적인 전체 인간’의 실현을 지향한다. 영화 <크루엘라>에서 주인공 에스텔라의 여정은 인격의 치우친 발달로 전일성이 쪼개지고 그림자가 점점 더 강력해지다가, 대극으로의 반전을 거쳐 그림자와의 통합에 이르는 개성화 과정으로 볼 수 있다. 이 과정에는 에스텔라의 개인무의식과 원형적 어머니상이 맞물린 ‘모성 콤플렉스’ 및 그 극복 양상이 긴밀하게 얽혀 있다. 이런 관점으로 이 글에서는 그림자와 모성 콤플렉스 문제를 중심으로 영화 <크루엘라>에 나타난 개성화 과정을 구체적으로 살펴본다. 크루엘라로 출현하는 어두운 그림자를 수용하고 동화하는 일은 에스텔라에게 자신의 창조적 잠재력을 실현하는 일인 동시에, 도덕적 쟁점을 수반하는 윤리적 요청의 성격을 띤다. 한편 주인공의 모성 콤플렉스는 이 영화에서 ‘양육하는 어머니’와 ‘삼키는 어머니’라는 신화적인 어머니상과 관련된다. 그녀의 개성화 과정은 신화적인 ‘이중의 어머니’에 묶인 자신의 퇴행적 리비도를 해방하는 내적 투쟁의 과정이기도 하다. 이를 검토함으로써 영화 <크루엘라>의 신화적 이야기가 무의식적 드라마로서 우리에게 어떤 상징적 의미를 지니는지 생각해본다.
The movie Cruella is a film that richly embodies the process of “Individuation”, the core of Jungian psychology. According to Jung, individuation refers to the process of restoring the wholeness of the “Self” by integrating unconscious elements of the Ego: the center of conscious life. In the process of individuation, we first assimilate the “Shadow”, which is the dark part of the Ego’s personality, and recognize the complex, elements of the Personal Unconscious. We also become conscious of the Archetypes underlying the complex. Through this, individuation ultimately aims to realize “autonomous whole human beings.” In the movie Cruella, Estella’s wholeness is divided into Ego and Shadow due to the biased development of her personality. Her shadow becomes increasingly powerful, and eventually she merges with her shadow after the reversal of the opposite pole. Her individuation process is closely intertwined with the “Mother Complex” that combines the Personal Unconscious and the archetypal mother imago. Therefore, this essay examines the process by focusing on the problem of the Shadow and Mother Complex. For Estella, accepting and assimilating the dark shadow named Cruella is not only a realization of her own creative potential but also an ethical request that includes moral issues. Meanwhile, her mother complex is related to the mythic mother imago: “nurturing mother” and “swallowing mother”. Her individuation is also a process of internal struggle to liberate her regressive libido tied to the mythic “dual mother.” This analysis suggests what the mythical story of the movie Cruella means to us as a symbolic unconscious drama.
