의천은 고려 전기 왕자 출신의 승려로 종교, 정치, 외교, 경제 등 여러 분야에서 업적을 남긴 인물로, 당대를 입체적으로 조명하기에 매우 적합한 인물이다. 그리고 의천처럼 다양한 분야에서 당대를 조명하기에 적합한 인물도 매우 드물다. 교과서에는 의천처럼 당대를 조명하기에 적합한 인물이 선정되어 수록되어야 그 시대와 사회를 조명할 수 있고, 이를 통해 학생들이 좀 더 쉽고 구체적으로 당대를 이해할 수 있다. 특히 심화 교육이 어려운 초등교육에서는 인물 중심 서술을 통해 어린 학생들이 역사에 쉽게 접근 할 수 있다. 그리고 이를 기초로 하여 중등 교육에서는 인물이 남긴 각 분야의 업적과 의미를 심화하여 다룰 필요가 있다. 이렇게 기초와 심화가 연계되어 설명되어 각급 학교에서 역사 교육이 유기적으로 수행되어야 한다.
