이 글에서 필자는 서울역사 연구와 관련하여 현재의 요구에 응답해야 하는 방식으로 영역을 확장하고 현재의 구역･필지･좌표, 점･선･면 단위의 미시 정보에서 질문을 시작해 나가는 방법론을 구사할 것을 제안했다. 최근 서울 도심에서 금속활자처럼 중요한 유물들이 속속 발굴되고 있다. 그러나 우리는 그 유물이 왜 ‘지금 여기’의 그 자리에 묻혔는지 쉽게 답할 수 없다. 필자는 금속활자 에피소드가 상징하는 사회적인 요구에 충분히 응답함으로서 서울역사 연구가 자기 영역을 넓혀갈 수 있다고 주장했다. 방법론적인 문제는 영역을 넓혀가는 것 이상으로 중요하다. 연구의 역사를 되돌아보면, 역사가들은 서울의 역사를 탐색하여 일국사의 역사상을 강화했으며, 서울의 도시적 기원을 주장하기도 했다. 한성･남경･한양･경성에서 출발하여 현재의 서울을 포괄적으로 전망하기도 했다. 그러나 선행연구에는 지금 여기의 서울이 가진 구역･필지･좌표, 점･선･면에 관한 고려가 충분치 않았다. ‘지금 여기’ 서울에서 우리가 인지할 수 있고 체험할 수 있는 구체적인 장소 정보로부터 출발하지 않았기 때문이다. 결국 서울史가 자기 정체성을 분명히 하려 한다면 전통적인 질문의 경계를 넘어서는 일, 질문의 방향을 바꾸는 일이 중요하다고 하지 않을 수 없다. ‘지금 여기’, 바로 그 장소에 대해 질문하고 그 장소적 조건과의 연관 속에서 역사 이야기를 찾아 보아야 하는 것이다. 많은 사람이 공공역사를 말하는 지금, 필요한 것은 역사학의 영역을 확장하고 새로운 연구 방법론을 더 적극적으로 찾아 나서는 일이다.
This paper reconsiders how to expand academic boundaries and refresh research methodology in historical research on Seoul. While revitalizing the downtown area, historical relics such as ally and metal type have been exexcavated these days. The problem is that no one knows what happened at the time on the site. Thus, the author argued that historians are the right person to answer the question. The latter, on the other hand, needs to use geographical information ranging from the district, lot, and coordinate to points, lines, and faces of Seoul. Looking back on the history of historical studies in Korea, historians had explored the history of Seoul not only to reinforce the national narrative but also to claim urban origins. They have also given a comprehensive view of contemporary Seoul. The problem is, however, that there has been no consideration of geographical information. They have not started from the geographical information that someone interested can perceive and experience. That is why the author also argued that the historical studies of Seoul need to go beyond the boundaries of traditional questions and change the direction of questions to clarify its identity. In this new academic climate of public history, what is needed for historians is to broaden the field of history and navigate new ways to renew research methodology.
