우리는 수많은 데이터가 존재하는 인터넷 공간에 접속하기 위해 포털이라는 관문을 거친다. 포털은 데이터 사회에 살아가는 사회 구성원이 시대적 흐름에 맞춰 그들이 제공하는 다양한 서비스를 누리고 즐길 수 있는 공간이다. 이 글은 <검색어를 입력하세요 WWW>의 서사적 배경이 포털(기업)이라는 점에 주목하여, 데이터 사회에서 가장 대중적이고 보편적인 사회적 산물인 포털 공간의 의미를 살펴보고자 한다. <검블유>에서는 국내 양대 포털 기업인 ‘유니콘’과 ‘바로’가 자사 서비스 사용자를 늘리기 위해 치열한 경쟁을 한다. ‘바로’로 이적한 배타미는 점유율 경쟁에서 이기기 위해 광고, 웹툰 작가 영입, 메인 화면 개편 등의 전략을 시도한다. 이때 드러난 스펙터클한 포털 이미지의 이면에 집중하면, 포털의 은폐된 작동원리를 파악할 수 있다. 즉, 포털이 새로운 경제체제에 신속하게 편입되어 신자유주의의 실상이 스며있는 공간이라는 점이다. 또한 포털의 여러 서비스 중 가장 중요한 것은 ‘검색’이다. 포털은 고유의 알고리즘에 따른 시스템을 통해 사용자가 만족할 만한 검색 서비스를 제공한다. <검블유>는 유력 대선 후보의 실검 삭제가 극 중 갈등의 시발점이다. 이는 알고리즘이라는 수학적 원리의 작동 방식이 객관적이고 투명한 것이 아니며, 정치와 자본 세력에게 끊임없이 기만당하고 있었음을 보여준다. <검블유>는 사회적 구성물로서 포털의 영향력을 우리에게 보여준다. 현 시대는 인터넷을 접속하지 않고 살아가는 것이 불가능하다. 따라서 사회 구성원은 인터넷과 우리의 세계를 잇는 포털(기업)의 스펙터클에 은폐되고 숨겨져 있는 작동원리를 볼 수 있는 혜안을 지닐 수 있는 노력이 필요하다.
We go through portals to access the plethora of data on the Internet. A portal is where members of the data society enjoy and use various services of the portal in line with the trends. Focusing on the fact that the narrative background of <Enter a Search Term WWW> is a portal (company), this study examines the meaning of the portal space, the most popular and universal social product of the data society. In <Enter a Search Term WWW>, Unicorn and Baro, the two largest Korean portal companies, compete fiercely to attract more users to their services. Bae Ta-mi, who moved to Baro, tries strategies such as advertising, recruiting webtoon writers, and reorganizing the main screen to win the market share competition. Focusing on the background to the spectacular portal image, we can understand the hidden operating principle of the portal. In other words, the portal is permeated with neoliberal realities as it is rapidly incorporated into the new economic system. Also, the most important of portals' many services is the ‘search’. Portals provide a search engine to satisfy users through a system based on their own algorithm. In “Enter a Search Term WWW,” the starting point of conflict is when a leading presidential candidate removes a real-time search word. This shows that the mathematical principle of algorithms is not objective and transparent and that it was constantly being deceived by politics and capital. <Enter a Search Term WWW> shows us the influence of portals as a social construct. It is impossible to live today without accessing the Internet. Therefore, members of society should try to gain the wisdom to see the hidden operating principles behind the portals (companies) connecting the internet and our world.
