이 연구는 《만선일보》 소재 아동문학 텍스트 안에서 삽화가 어떻게 작동하여 의미를 구현하였는지에 대하여 밝힌 글이다. 이 연구가 특히 삽화에 주목한 이유는 다음과 같다. 매체 안의 표상 시스템은 근대 국가 시스템의 중요한 요소로서, 국가 시스템이 효과적으로 작동하는 데 적극적으로 복무한다. 따라서 만주국의 기관지였던 《만선일보》의 삽화는 만주국이 조선인을 ‘국민’으로서 어떻게 호명하였는지를 보여주는 중요한 자료라고 할 수 있다. 이 연구서에서는 민족적 기표가 도드라지는 삽화를 선정하여 그것이 아동문학 텍스트와 어떠한 관계를 맺는지에 주목하였다. 또한 아동문학 텍스트와 삽화의 의도가 서로 일치하지 않고 괴리되는 부분에 대한 분석을 시도하였다. 그리고 이를 통해 발견한 사실은 다음과 같다. 신문사가 만들어낸 삽화의 경우 조선인들이 지닌 국민으로서의 미달태를 드러내려 하였는데, 대표적으로 어린이를 근대적 ‘아동’이 아닌 전근대적 아이로 표상하려 한 점을 들 수 있다. 한편 이러한 국민으로서의 결핍된 이미지는 문학 텍스트를 통하여 만주국 안에서 정상적인 국민이 되려 하는 열망으로 표출되었다. 특히 이러한 정상성에 대한 열망은 주로 문학 텍스트가 아닌 제복이나 교복을 입은 아동의 모습과 같은 삽화로써 넌지시 보여주는 방식을 취하였다. 하지만 《만선일보》에 게재된 아동문학 삽화가 모두 국가주의에 일관되게 복무하였던 것은 아니다. 결국 매체 안에서 조선인을 표상한다는 방식은 만주국의 국가 시스템을 드러내는 방식이기도 하였다. 까닭에 이러한 삽화의 표상 시스템은 조선인 스스로가 국민이면서도 외부자라는 사실을 부각시키는 역할 역시 수행하였던 것이다.
This study analyzes the illustrations of children's literature included in the Manseon Ilbo. In the case of children's literature, illustrations can convey a far stronger message to readers than text of juvenile literature. Therefore, research on illustrations is essential in the study of children's literature. In particular, in the case of literary texts, the author's thoughts are contained, but the illustration contains the intention of the newspaper. Therefore, illustration research is an important material for understanding the newspaper-media system called "Mansun Ilbo". In addition, this data shows how Koreans were intended to be represented as citizens in Manchuria at that time. The appearance of Koreans in the illustrations of children's literature in the Manseon Ilbo is always represented in a dearth form. In particular, the poor appearance in Choseon clothes corresponds to the typical appearance of Koreans. It conveys the logic that life in Choseon is poor and life in Manchuria is happy. After all, it was a propagand that promoted nationalism, which was emphasized in Manchuria at the time. What was particularly emphasized in the illustrations of children's literature was that Koreans were not children, but only children in a natural state. In other words, it was emphasized that the child of Choseon was insufficient as a modern human being. On the other hand, children's novels also showed the process of children becoming children, and in the illustrations, children were presented in Japanese military uniforms. In the end, being a child means being managed by the national system. However, not all illustrations represent intentions of Japan. Sometimes, in the illustrations, the feelings of hatred that could not be hidden between each nation were revealed. The illustrations also emphasized poor appearance, but they tried to express his identity more prominently through this appearance. In other words, the illustrations represent Koreans in the form of outsiders who conform to nationalism but are difficult to belong to the state.
