본 연구는 디지털 공간에서 여성들의 성적 실천의 양상과 그 속에서 위험이 관리되 는 방식을 탐구한다. 이를 위해 섹트계에 대한 참여관찰과 18세 이상의 계정 운영 여성들에 대한 심층면접을 진행했다. 섹트계는 섹스(sex)와 트위터(twitter)의 합성어인 ‘섹트(sext)’라는 해시태그와 함께 성적인 이미지나 게시물을 올리는 트위터 계정을 의미 한다. 오늘날 디지털 성폭력에 대한 경각심이 고조되고 있음에도 섹트계의 여성들은 디지털 공간에서 자신의 성적 자아를 표출하기를 선택한다. 익명적 소셜미디어는 규범적 자아를 감추고 ‘일탈적’ 성적자아와 욕망을 표출할 수 있다는 점에서 ‘안전한’ 실천의 장이며, 여성성과 성애화된 신체에 쏟아지는 관심은 즐거움을 이끌어낸다. 하지만 디지털 공간의 ‘안전’은 불완전하며, 성적자아와 규범적 자아의 경계선에 대한 침범의 가능성은 이들의 실천을 위태롭게 한다. 따라서 여성들은 위험에 대한 경험과 지식을 바탕으로 디지털 기술을 활용하여 위험을 구분하고 관리한다. 직ㆍ간접적인 피해의 경험 속에서도 지속되는 섹트계는 디지털에서 위험과 안전, 즐거움의 감각이 교차적으로 상존하며 위험관리가 성적 실천의 한 부분으로 더욱 첨예해지고 있음을 보여준다. 한편 개별화된 위험관리가 유일한 대응책이 된다는 것은 성적 규범을 위반한 여성들의 고립된 위치를 드러낸다.
This article explores how women engage in sexual practices and manage risks in digital space based on in-depth interviews with women who expose their sexualized bodies on Twitter. They post sexual images of themselves with the hashtag “sext,”a portmanteau of the words “sex“ and “Twitter”. Despite growing awareness of digital sexual violence in Korea, women behind the “sext” accounts choose to express their sexual selves in digital space. Anonymous social media is a “safe” space of practice in that women can display sexual selves which deviate from the gender norm and sexual hierarchy while hiding the normative selves. They experience pleasurable affect from attention on their femininity and sexualized bodies. However, as the possible invasion of the boundary between the sexual and normative selves jeopardizes their practice, women distinguish and manage risks. The ‘risk management’ of “sext” women suggests that pleasure and a sense of safety intersect with danger. On the other hand, the individualization of risk management implies that women who violate gender and sexuality norms are isolated from other social resources to prevent risk and danger.
