순원왕후는 19세기 세도정치기 연구에서 중요한 위상을 가지는 인물이다. 그는 세도 정권의 대표 인물로 일컬어지는 김조순의 딸이자, 세도정치기의 시작점이 되는 국왕 순조의 왕비이다. 또, 세도 가문의 독단적 정국 운영을 국왕 중심으로 되돌리고자 했던 효명세자의 어머니, 헌종의 할머니이다. 즉, 순원왕후는 세도정치기 핵심 인물들을 관통하는 유일무이한 존재라 할 수 있다. 그리고 헌종대와 철종대를 합한 10여 년간의 수렴청정을 통해 정사를 직접 주재했던 특수한 여성 인물이기도 하다. 그는 조정론의 입장에서 정국을 이끌었던 부친 김조순의 영향과 국왕 중심의 정국 운영을 구현하고자 한 왕실의 입장을 동시에 구현해야 하는 과제를 지니고 있었다. 따라서 안동김씨 친정 형제들을 의지하는 한편 왕실과 친정의 입장이 상충할 때는 왕실의 입장에서 친정을 제어하는 모습을 보이기도 하였다. 철종대 수렴청정기 순원왕후는 왕실과 친정의 최고 어른으로서 자신의 입장을 표명하며 정치적 역할을 수행했다. 선대왕 정조, 순조가 보호하고 부친 김조순이 조력했던 영조의 혈맥을 후사로 선정하여 철종을 즉위시켰다. 그리고 철종비 간택에 있어서도 안동김씨가 아닌 소론 가문을 선정하고자 했는데, 이는 왕실과 부친 김조순이 공유하고 있었던 권력 균형의 입장을 계승하고 있다. 철종초 신해조천예송의 갈등 국면에서도 탄핵의 대상이었던 권돈인을 보호함으로써 정계의 극단적 대립 상황을 지양하는 입장을 보였다. 그렇지만 순원왕후의 이러한 입장을 안동김씨와 대립하는 반대 세력을 포용했다는 긍정적 시각으로만 바라볼 수는 없다. 그가 보여준 정계의 극단적 갈등을 무마하는 온건함은 새로운 방향을 모색하고 진전을 이루어 나가야 했던 19세기 격동기에 분명한 한계를 갖는 것이었다. 결국 이러한 순원왕후의 입장과 태도는 기존 정국 운영의 현상유지를 넘어 변화하는 현실에 발맞추는 대응을 보여주지 못하는 것이었다.
