본고는 조선후기 중편한문소설 「유생전(劉生傳)」의 장르 귀속을 재자가인소설(才子佳人小說)의 측면에서 논의해 보고, 작품 속 남녀주인공의 결연양상이 어떠한 원리를 갖고 진행되는지 분석하고자 하였다. 그간 「유생전」은 전기소설과 영웅소설의 범주에서 논의되었지만, 궁극적으로 천정배필로 맺어진 재자와 가인이 제3자의 개입으로 고난과 역경에 부딪히다가 행복한 결연을 맞이하게 된다는 재자가인소설의 서사적 지향과 맞닿아있다. 아울러 「유생전」의 결연이 지연되는 방식은 초·중반부에서 반복되는 혼사장애에서 두드러지는데 그 원리가 ①義↔忠 ②義↔利 ③義↔孝와 같이 윤리적 덕목을 충돌시켜 작중 인물을 딜레마적 상황을 조성하는 것에 놓여있다. 결과적으로 「유생전」은 ‘결연(結緣)의 지연 과정’을 ‘신의(信義)의 실현 과정’과 중첩시키는 방향으로 작품의 주제와 흥미를 구현하고 있다.
This paper is discussed the genre of “Yusaengjeon (劉生傳)” in terms novel of Jejagain (才子佳人小說), and analyzed how the aspect of the relationship between male and female protagonists continued in the novel. It has been discussed in the category of novel of Jeongi (傳奇小說) or heroic novel (英雄小說) of the genre of “Yusaengjeon”. However, ultimately, this story is in line with the character of the genre of novel of Jejagain (才子佳人小說), which is the plot of the god-ordained couple, Jea-ja (才子) and Ga-in (佳人) struggle with hardship and adversity by the intervention of third-party, but eventually, they go through problems and turns the happy couple. In addition, the delay in the relationship of the main characters in “Yusaengjeon” is noticeable in the obstacles of marriage that are repeated at the beginning and middle of the story. The ways of putting protagonists under challenging situations are conflicting moral concepts such as faith (義) vs. loyalty (忠), faith (義) vs. benefit (利), and faith (義) vs. filial duty (孝), which cause dilemma. As a result, the writer of 「Yusaengjeon」 embodies the theme and interest of the work in the direction of overlapping the delaying of ‘the relationship of the couple (結緣)’ with the process of achieving ‘good faith (信義).
