애니메이션은 인간이 꿈꾸는 환상과 허구를 자유롭게 표현할 수 있는 매체이자, 인간 내면의 깊은 곳으로부터 끝없는 반향과 미적 경험을 제공한다. 북한에서 만들어진 애니메이션 또한 반드시 선전선동으로 귀결되는 내러티브를 구사하지 않았다. 아동미술가 임홍은은 1960년에 북한 최초의 애니메이션 <신기한복숭아>와 <금도끼와 쇠도끼>를 제작했다. 이 애니메이션은 선과 악을 이분법적으로 구분하는 서사를 갖춰, 아동에게 권선징악이라는 교훈을 주기 위해 제작되었다. 형식에 있어서는 사회주의 리얼리즘이 갖춰야할 ‘현실과 낭만’보다 ‘환상과 허구’를 채택해 관람대상인 아동, 청소년에게 풍부한 상상력을 자극하고자했다.
Animation is a medium that can freely express the fantasy and fiction that humans dream of, and provides endless sensations and aesthetic experiences from the depths of the human inner world. Animation made in North Korea also did not use narratives that necessarily resulted in agitation-propaganda. A Children artist Lim Hong-un produced the first animations, Mysterious Peach and The Gold Axes and The Iron Axes, in 1960. This animation is designed to teach children a lesson of the good triumphing over the evil., with a dichotomy between good and bad. In terms of form, it was intended to stimulate rich imagination for children and adolescents to watch by adopting “fantasy and fiction” rather than “reality and romance” that socialist realism should have.
