『은부현정론』은 조선 중종대 조정의 불교 관련 논의가 실질적으로 이루어지지 않던 무렵, 지방의 사찰이 증가하고 목판본 불서 간행이 급증하던 때에 간행된 호불 논서이다. 이 시기의 대표적 호불 논서인 『유석질의론』과 『은부현정론』은 모두 연기사에서 최초로 간행되었는데, 전 시기 간행된 기화의 『현정론』이 수세적 차원의 호교론을 펼치는 것과 달리, 이 두 책은 각 저자가 개성적 필치로 다양한 논거를 사용하여 더욱 적극적으로 불교의 우월성을 강조한다. 문답의 구조를 띠고 있는 『은부현정론』은 기타 호불 논서와 달리 가탁이라는 문학적 형식을 빌려 가상의 시공간을 설정했고, 마지막 부분에서 『장자』와 「노자한비열전」 등에 나오는 표현을 이용해 불교가 유학보다 우위에 있다는 것을 보다 문학적으로 구현해내었다. 『은부현정론』은 儒佛을 막론하고 상당히 다양한 종류의 서적을 전거로 활용하였다. 다만 불경의 표현보다는 유학서의 표현을 사용한 경우가 더 많으며, 이는 저자의 박학과 화려한 문장 구사를 보여준다. 이 시기 불교는 그 전통이 단절되기보다는 오히려 강학용 저서를 출간함으로써 전통을 더욱 공고히 다져가거나, 다양한 개성적 저술을 출간하는 면모를 보인다. 연기사에서 최초로 간행한 『은부현정론』의 문체적 특징과 저술 형식은 그 자체로 조선 시대 불교의 새로운 역사상을 보여준다는 데에 의의가 있다.
The discussion on illuminating the Orthodox Dharma of Dongoeunboo is a treatise professing to protect Buddhism published when governmental discussions concerning Buddhism were not proceeded effectively in the Jungjong period during which constructions of Buddhist temples increased and publication of Buddhist books was sharply rising. The discussion between Confucian and Buddhist and The discussion on illuminating the Orthodox Dharma of Dongoeunboo, representative Buddhism protecting treatises in that period, were published in Yeonki temple initially. Whereas The discussion on illuminating the Orthodox Dharma of Kiwha in the preceding period claimed to protect Buddhism in a passive way, these two publications emphasized the superiority of Buddhism more actively as each authors utilized one’s characteristic style of writing and presented various reasons. Unlike other Buddhism protecting treatises, The discussion on illuminating the Orthodox Dharma of Dongoeunboo comprising question-answer format embodied literarily that Buddhism is superior to Confucianism establishing imaginary setting and referring to expressions in Zhuangzi and Laozi Han Fei Biography in the last part adopting the form of literature. The discussion on illuminating the Orthodox Dharma of Dongoeunboo utilized considerably large pools of publications as references regardless of whether it is Confucian or Buddhistic. Merely, it gave preference to expressions in Confucian publications and this aspect demonstrates the author’s erudition and his splendid writing skills. During this era, Buddhism manifested its aspect to embrace Confucianism publishing diverse types of publications rather than severing its tradition. Concerning The discussion on illuminating the Orthodox Dharma of Dongoeunboo published in Yeonki temple, stylistic features of it and the aspects concerning its appreciation are meaningful in that they reveal the novel aspect of history of Buddhism in the Joseon Dynasty.
