이 연구는 근대 초 서양 예법에 관한 일련의 서적이 출판되는 시기에 주목하여 서양인과의 교제의 필요성과 서양 예법서의 출현 배경 및 간행 양상을 살펴보는 데 목적이 있다. 근대 초기 개항 및 외교를 통해 서양인과의 교류가 시작되면서 이전에 없던 지식이 요구되었다. 특히 외국과의 통상조약으로 사절단 및 유학 등으로 해외 체험을 하는 조선인들이 생겨나고 조선 내부에서도 서양인과의 교류에 필요한 지식이 요구되기 시작했다. 이른바 서양 예법에 관한 지식이 ‘서례(西禮)’라는 용어로 새롭게 대두되었던 것이다. 박정양과 이상재 등 미국 체험을 한 이들이 학부 교과서 편집과 저술에 관여하면서 서양 예법에 관한 서적의 간행이 현실화 되기에 이른다. 그 대표적인 서적이 1896년 학부편집국이 번역한 서례수지(西禮須知)이다. 이 밖에 법조인인 유동작이 1905년 저술한 교제신례(交際新禮)와 개화 지식인으로 활동한 이철주가 1909년 편집한 서례편고(西禮便考)가 서양 예법서로 간행되었다. 서양 예법에 관해 마땅히 알아야 할 내용이라든가 지침과 같은 책의 제목만으로 서양예법에 관한 서적이 당대 어떻게 인식되었는지 짐작할 수 있다. 또 외국과의 교류가 활발해지면서 국내에 새롭게 유입된 서양인과의 교제에 새로운 예법이 필요하다는 인식도 수반되었음을 알 수 있다. 그렇지만 서양 예법서의 간행은 1910년을 기점으로 쇠퇴하는데 이 같은 양상은 일제강점기 계몽 서적의 쇠퇴와 궤를 같이 한다는 점에서 특기할 만하다. 이는 시대적 필요가 다한 이유와 함께 식민지 상황에서 서양인과의 교제보다 일본인과 교류하거나 교제하는 것이 더 시급한 당면 과제로 부상했을 가능성 때문이다.

The purpose of this study is to examine the need for the friendship with Western people by focusing on the period in which a series of books of the Western etiquette in the early modern period. New knowledge of the Western etiquette was required, as the exchange with Western people began through the opening of ports and diplomatic activities. In particular, diplomatic missions emerged based on commercial treaties with foreign countries and Joseon people came to have foreign experiences as they studied abroad, so the knowledge necessary for interacting with Western people began to be required within the Joseon Dynasty. Such knowledge of the Western etiquette newly emerged as a term, ‘Seorye(西禮)’. The publication of books about the Western etiquette was realized as people who have had experience about America, such as Park Jeogyang and Lee Sangjae, engaged in the editing and writing of textbooks for colleges. One of the representative books was Seoryesuji (西禮須知) translated by an editorial office of a college, in 1896. The other books include Gyojesinrye (交際新禮) written by Yu Dongjak(柳東作), a Joseon person, in 1905 and Seoryepyeongo(西禮便考) edited by Lee Cheolji (李喆柱), an enlightened intellectual, 1909. It is possible to estimate how the books of the Western etiquette were recognized only with essential knowledge or guidelines about the Western etiquette. In addition, it can be found that the recognition on new etiquette necessary for the interaction with Western people who first came to Joseon was accompanied. The publication of the books about the Western etiquette, however, began to be declined since 1910. Such a trend corresponded to the decline of books about the enlightenment under the Japanese colony, because the interaction and exchange with Japanese people emerged as a more urgent challenge, than those with Western people.
