「바티칸 리포트」, 즉 ‘분파 혹은 신종교 운동: 사목적 도전’은 분파(Sects), 컬트(Cults), 혹은 유사(類似) 종교, 사이비(似而非) 종교, 이단(異端) 등으로 불리는 신종교 운동(New Religious Movements)에 대한 가톨릭 교회의 첫 공식 문서이다. 이 문서는 가톨릭 교회의 신종교 운동에 대한 일반 원칙과 자세에 대한 토대를 마련해주었다. 하지만 이문서는 일반적이고 포괄적인 신종교 운동에 대한 접근과 표현, 그리고 이 문서의 의의와 목적에 대한 오해로 인하여 교회 내·외적으로 다양하게 해석되었다. 그래서 본 논문에서 는「바티칸 리포트」의 내용이 어떻게 상이하게 해석되었는지를 살펴본 후 1980년대 초반부터 신종교 운동에 대한 연구를 해온 가톨릭 학자 존 A. 살리바의 해석을 중심으로 「바티칸 리포트」에 대한 올바른 이해에 접근해 보고자 하였다. 이것으로 가톨릭 교회의 신종교 운동에 대한 자세는 반컬트주의적이지 않으며, 오히려 건설적인 ‘사목적 도전’으로 받아들이고 있음을 확인하게 되었다. 그래서 본 논문은 이러한 이해를 바탕으로 결론에서 신종교 운동이 교회의 ‘건강한 사목적 도전’이 될 수 있도록 사목적 제언을 하였다.
The Vatican Report, ‘Sects or New Religious Movements: Pastoral Challenge’ is the first official document of the Catholic Church regards New Religious Movements called Sects or Cults, Quasi-religions or Pseudo-religions, and heresies. The Report has prepared a foundation of general principles and attitudes of the Catholic Church to New Religious Movements. However, this Report was interpreted in various ways inside and outside of the Church due to the general and comprehensive approach towards New Religious Movements, and misunderstandings of its meaning and purpose. Therefore, in this paper, I first look at how the contents of the Vatican Report were interpreted differently, and then try to approach the correct understanding of the Vatican Report, focusing on the interpretation of Catholic Scholar John A. Saliba, who has been studying New Religious Movements since the early 1980s. This confirms that the attitude of the Catholic Church towards New Religious Movements is not Anti-Cultism, but the Church accepts it as constructive ‘pastoral challenges’. Thus, in the conclusion of this paper, I give pastoral suggestions so that New Religious Movements could be ‘healthy pastoral challenges’ for the Church based on this understanding.
