이 글은 조선의 『홍범황극내편』연구사를 개괄하면서 특히 조선후기 『내편』연구의 주요저작인 이주천의 『신증황극내편』과 이원구의 『홍범황극내편석의』의 내용과 사상적 특징을 고찰한 것이다. 연구결과 조선에서 채침 『내편』에 대한 전문적 연구서는 많지 않지만, 『내편』은 널리 읽혔고, 범수(範數)를 활용한 점법 또한 식자들의 관심의 대상이었으며, 생활문화 속에서 자연스레 쓰이고 있었음을 알 수 있었다. 정조시대에는 수학과 도학이 별개가 아니라는 인식 하에 ‘황극의 정치’를 실현하고자 『내편』을 주제로 한 책문이 등장하는 것을 볼 수 있다. 이주천의 『신증황극내편』은 그 책의 제목처럼, 기존『내편』 연구의 미비한 점을 보망(補亡)하고 새롭게 연구해서 신증(新增)한 것이다. 그는 의리와 상수, 양방면에 충분히 유의하여 상수방면으로는 「신증구구행수도」, 「범언(範言)」을 신증하였고, 의리학적으로는 「주왈(疇曰)」과 「수왈(數曰)」을 보망하였다. 이 가운데 「범언」은 범수에 일종의 ‘효사(爻辭)’를 붙인 것으로, 이주천의 독창적 시도라 하겠다. 이외에 「신증범수지도」는 채침의 「범수지도」에 그가 보완한 「수왈」의 요점을 각 수마다 배치한 것이다. 「수왈」은 『주역』이 「대상전」에 견줄 수 있는 것으로 윤리적, 수양론적 내용을 담고 있다는 점에서, 「신증범수도」는 상수와 의리를 아우르려는 이주천의 역학관을 잘 드러낸다. 이원구『내편』 연구의 특징은 ‘보망’ ‘보해’ ‘신증’의 형태를 취하지 않고, ‘구도육사론(九道六事論)’이라는 자신의 이론체계로 81범수와 ‘홍범구주’를 설명한다는 것이다. 9･6은 건곤음양을 대표하는 수로서, 9･6의 상함적 구조는 우주자연과 인사, 인간의 마음을 관통하여 일관되게 적용된다. 이원구는 ‘황극’을 ‘임금의 일심(一心)’으로 정의하고, 숫자로는 81수 가운데 5-5인 중(中)에 해당한다고 한다. 임금이 중(中)의 일심을 얻어, 그에 의거한 정치를 펼치는 것이 황극의 정치이다. 이주천과 이원구는 「내편」연구에서 상수와 의리의 통합을 매우 중시하였으며, 이원구의 경우는 그 통합의 주체로서 일심을 강조함을 볼 수 있다. 상수와 의리가 사람의 마음을 주체로 해서 통합된다는 인식은 조선 말 이항로의 『내편』연구에서도 뚜렷하게 드러나는 것으로, 한국역학의 한 특색을 보여준다고 하겠다.
This article summarizes the history of HongBeomHwanggeukNaepyeon research in Joseon, especially considering the contents and characteristics of Sinjeung HwanggeukNaepyeon of Lee Ju-cheon and HongBeomHwanggeukNaepyeonseog-ui of Lee Won-gu, the main work of Hong Beom Hwanggeuk Naepyeon research in the late Joseon Dynasty. As a result of the study, there are not many professional studies on Beom Hwanggeuk Naepyeon in Joseon, but Hong- BeomHwanggeukNaepyeon was widely read, and it was found that its divination method was also naturally used in living culture. In the reign of King Jeongjo, it can be seen that the examination questions for civil servants based on the theme of HongBeomHwanggeukNaepyeon appeared. Like the title of the book, Lee Ju-cheon's SinjeungHwanggeukNaepyeon compensates for the deficiencies of existing research HongBeomHwanggeuk Naepyeon and expands the research area. The characteristic of Lee Won-gu's study of HongBeomHwanggeukNaepyeon explains HongBeomHwanggeukNaepyeon with his own theoretical system. Research HongBeomHwanggeukNaepyeon in Joseon has now begun its first step, and there are many research tasks. In order to examine the overall topographic map of the Yijing study in the Joseon Dynasty, it is necessary to study not only the humanities but also the literature on Image & Number. On this basis, the Korean Yijing study will reveal its full extent and enable a balanced description of the history of Korean Yijing.
