이글은 2013년에 발간된 『민중사를 다시 말한다』 이후 10여 년 간 제출된 민중사 연구 가운데 19세기 말~20세기 초의 시기를 다룬 연구들을 살펴본 것이다. 또 이 시기의 민중사 연구성과 가운데 다음 두 가지 문제의식과 관련이 있는논저들을 중심으로 살펴본 것이다. 첫째, 근대비판 내지 근대의 상대화와 관련된 연구들이다. 둘째, 민중 구성의 다양성을 드러낸 연구, 그리고 다양한 정체성을 가진 민중들 간의 연대라는 문제의식과 연결되는 연구들이다. 이상의 두 가지 문제의식을 중심으로 검토하는 것은 『민중사를 다시 말한다』에서 제시한 문제의식의 핵심이 이 두 가지였다고 생각하기 때문이다. 이글에서는 먼저 이러한문제의식을 담고 있는 대표적인 연구성과들의 내용과 연구사적 의미를 소개하고, 이어서 각 연구들에 대한 필자의 생각을 간단히 정리함으로써 향후 한 걸음더 진전된 연구 방향을 모색해보고자 하였다. 새로운 연구 방법을 통해 기왕의연구와는 다른 민중상을 그리고 있는 연구들이 적지 않았다. 그러나 민중과 근대를 어떤 관계 속에서 바라볼 것인가 하는 점과 민중을 구성하는 다양한 목소리들이 연대하는 조건이나 연대의 과정에서 보이는 또 다른 가능성에 대해서는좀 더 깊은 고민이 필요하다고 생각한다.
This article examines studies dealing with the late 19th and early 20th centuries among the studies on popular history published over the past decade. In addition, among the research results, the following two thesis related to problem consciousness were examined. First, studies with critical ideas about modern times. Second, studies that revealed that the identity and values of the people who make up the people were diverse, and studies dealing with solidarity between the people with various identities. This article first introduced the contents and meanings of representative research achievements dealing with these topics, and then attempted to find a more advanced research direction by presenting my comments on each study. thoughts on each study.
