This study explores the impact on the operation of the Jongmyo system in Silla after its reorganization in the reign of King Aejang, which consisted of “establishing two separate shrines for King Muyeol and King Munmu(別立二廟)” and “composed of five shrines(五廟) with four direct ancestors of the present king and the progenitor.”According to the Jongmyo system of King Aejang, instead of moving King Wonseong from Jongmyo Shrine, King Gyeongmun repaired the tomb of King Wonseong and rebuilt Sungboksa Temple. The reorganization of the Jongmyo system in the reign of King Aejang played a decisive role in establishing the late royal family(the lineage of King Wonseong) by enshrining the four direct ancestors of the present king in Jongmyo. However, the expulsion of King Wonseong from Jongmyo, which in turn weakened the status of Jongmyo in Silla as the backbone of the late royal family and the national ancestral rites.
