본 연구의 목적은 무자녀 중년여성의 삶의 경험을 살펴보고 그 경험의 의미를 이해하는데 있다. 이에 참여자의 경험을 시간성, 사회성, 장소의 3차원적 내러티브 탐구 공간 안에서 살펴보았다. 이에 연구 방법은 Clandinin과 Connelly가 제시한 내러티브 탐구방법의 절차를 따라 진행하였다. 연구대상은 결혼기간 10년 이상, 40세 이상 59세 이하의 무자녀 중년여성 3명으로 이들은 모두 자발적으로 심층면담에 참여하였다. 연구 결과 무자녀 중년여성들은 자녀 없음으로 인한 삶의 갈등 속에서 자기이해와 자기성찰, 자기성장의 과정을 통해 ‘있는 그대로 가치 있는 존재’로 자신을 재탄생시키며 지속적으로 스스로를 성장시켜 나아가고 있었다. 연구 참여자들이 도출한 무자녀 중년여성의 삶의 의미는 ‘소외된 삶 속에서 미운 아기오리의 갈등’, ‘갈등 속에서도 성장함’, ‘백조로 거듭남’으로 공통된 주제를 안데르센의 동화 미운 아기오리에 비유하여 해석하였다. 본 연구는 무자녀 중년여성에 대한 내러티브 형성과 사회적 이해도를 높이는 데 의의가 있다.
The purpose of this study is to look into the narrative studies of a childless middle aged woman’s life and to understand the experience. The participants’ experiences were examined in three - dimensional narrative inquiries of time, sociality, and location. The research method was followed by the procedure of the narrative exploration method presented by Clandinin and Connelly. The study examined three childless middle-aged women aged between 40 or older to 59 and under who were married for 10 years or more, all of whom voluntarily participated in-depth interview. The results of childless middle-aged women continuously evolved to the point where the idea of "accepting their self-worthiness as is" was recreated and it kept on redesigning in themselves through a process of self-understanding, self-reflection and self-growth. The meaning of the life of a middle-aged woman without children derived by the study participants was interpreted by comparing common topics such as "conflict of ugly baby ducks in an isolated life," "grown in conflict," and "reincarnation as swans" to Andersen’s The Ugly Duckling. This study is meaningful in that it increase the social understanding of the life of childless middle aged woman’s through narrative exploration.
