There are many theological, doctrinal, and historical studies of John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist movement in England. However, research into Wesley’s homiletics is thus far relatively rare, despite the fact that his preaching and sermons formed the foundation for his theology and practice. That is to say, Wesley’s theology of preaching is the fundamental platform for all his subsequent theological content and forms. For this reason, this paper explores Wesley’s preaching theology, which led to a significant revival movement in his time, and details what today’s preachers can learn from it. To do this, I examine the issues of the Trinity, Bible, and Gospel, which are the most important and basic elements of the theology of preaching in the Wesleyan primary sources. From this examination I draw out wisdom for sound biblical and gospel preaching for the salvation of souls, which is the hallmark of authentic Christian preaching.
감리교의 창시자 존 웨슬리의 신학에 대한 조직신학적이며 역사신학적 자료들과 연구들은 많다. 그러나 그의 설교학적 연구는 상대적으로 매우 미흡하다. 엄밀히 말해, 그의 신학적 ‧ 실천적 근간은 그의 설교에 있다. 즉 그의설교신학이 곧 그의 신학의 근본 플랫폼이라고 해도 과언이 아닐 것이다. 이에 본 논문은 존 웨슬리의 설교신학을 탐구하면서 18세기 영국 기독교에부흥의 역사를 일으킨 요소가 무엇인지 살펴보고 그것을 통해 현대 설교에있어 배울 점이 무엇인지 연구해 보고자 함에 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 설교신학의 가장 기초적 요소요, 근본적 주제가 되는 삼위일체, 성서, 복음의문제를 존 웨슬리의 일차 자료를 위주로 탐구하였으며, 이를 통해 오늘날까지 여전히 중요한 설교학적 과제가 되는 성서적 설교 그리고 복음적 설교를위한 신학적 ‧ 신앙적 대선배의 지혜를 찾게 되었다.
