최근 확산되고 있는 세대론은 세대와 불평등을 결합시켜 논한다는 점에서 이전의 세대론과 중요한 차이를 보인다. 『그런 세대는 없다』는 세대 간 불평등을 부각시키는최근의 세대론이 세대 내 이질성을 간과하고 세대 간 불평등을 과장함으로써 각 세대내특정집단의특성을세대전체의 특성으로허위일반화하고있음을비판한다.특히이와 같은 세대불평등 담론과 이로부터 촉발된 세대갈등이 특정한 정치적 국면에서부각되는 정치담론의 성격을 보인다는 점을 여러 통계자료와 언론기사의 보도추이를 통해 실증적으로 분석하고 있다. 세대 내 격차와 이질성은 세대론의 기본적 한계를 잘 드러내지만, 동시에 세대를 통해 표현되고 있는 집합적 감정 역시 그 자체로 중요한 사회적 사실이다. 세대를 통해 표현되는 집합적 감정은 사회현상에 대한 편향된 시각이나 무지에 기인하는 것이 아니라 평범한 사람의 도덕감과 부정의에 대한 감각에 기초한 인지적 판단과 가치평가의차원을드러낸다. 집합적감정에내재된비판적판단의 내용을이해하고해석하는데실패할때, 고통받는당사자들의피해의경합으로오늘날과 같은세대갈등과젠더갈등의 양상은 심화된다. 세대론의 범람은 현재의 젊은 세대가 처한 상황과 그것을야기한 구조적 변동에 관하여 의미 있고 쓸모 있는 지식을 생산해 내는 데 실패한 현실을 드러내 준다.
The discourse of the recent generation differs significantly from that of the previous generation in its strong focus on inequality. Geureon sedae neun eopda (There Is No Such Generation) criticizes the recent generational discourse for overlooking the heterogeneity within a generation, exaggerating the inequality between generations, and falsely generalizing the characteristics of certain groups within each generation as typifying the characteristics of that entire generation. Jinwook Shin empirically analyzes the discourses on generational conflict, using statistical analysis of media articles to show how they emerge during particular political phases. The emotions expressed collectively by specific generations are, however, important social facts. They do not result from a biased perspective, nor from a naive ignorance of social phenomena; rather they reveal shared cognitive assessments and evaluations deriving from the moral sense of ordinary people. When the critical judgment inherent in these collective emotions is misunderstood or misinterpreted, then generational conflict becomes more openly competitive, leading to the kind of suffering experienced today in Korea. Indeed, the current torrent of generational discourse makes little contribution towards the production of useful knowledge about the structural situation of the current younger generation.
