본고는 광주 지역에서 청유형 종결어미로 사용되는 ‘게요’의 의미와 문법화 과정을 살펴보는 데에 목적이 있다. 화자의 의지를 나타낼 때 사용되는 표준어 ‘-게’와 달리 광주 방언 종결어미 ‘-게요’는 제안을 위한 청유문에서 사용되며 화청자의 관계에 따라 명령의 간접 화행 표지로도 사용된다. 본고는 광주 지역에서만 사용되는 ‘-게요’의 의미와 파생 과정을 알아보기 위해 ‘-게요’가 사용된 실제 대화를 수집하고 분석하였다. 이를 위해 먼저표준어 ‘-게요’의 의미와 각 의미에 맞는 대체 어미를 살피고 광주 방언 ‘-게요’가 쓰인 문장에 표준어 ‘-게요’의 대체 어미를 교체하여 광주 방언 ‘-게요’가 가지는 의미를 정리하고파생 과정을 유추하였다. 그 결과, 광주 방언 ‘-게요’는 목적 연결어미 ‘게’가 종결어미 ‘- 게요’로 문법화되는 단계에서 분화된 것으로 보았다.
This paper aims to examine the meaning and the grammaticalization process of '-geyo', which is used as the a final ending for a proposal in Gwangju. Unlike the standard word ‘-geyo’, which is used to express the listener’s will, the Gwangju dialect ‘-geyo’ is used to express a proposal and also as an indirect dialogue act mark of commands. This paper collects and analyzes actual conversations where ‘-geyo’ is used to investigate the meaning and derivation process of ‘-geyo’, which is used only in Gwangju. It first looks at the meaning of the standard word ‘-geyo’ and the alternative final endings for each meaning. Further, the meaning of ‘-geyo’ in the Gwangju dialect was determined and the derivation process was inferred by replacing the replacement ending of the standard word '-geyo' in the sentence in which the Gwangju dialect '-geyo' was written. Thus, the Gwangju dialect '-geyo' seems to have been differentiated at the stage where the object connecting ending ‘-ge’ is grammatically converted into the final ending '-geyo'.
