갈재 옛길은 전북 정읍시 입압면과 전남 장성군 북이면을 연결하는 고갯길이다. 예로부터 갈재 옛길은 호남지역에서 가장 상징적인 고갯길로 인식되어 왔고, 정사와 시문을 통해 전해오는 많은 이야기는 갈재 옛길의 역사적가치를 짐작게 한다. 한편으로 지역의 지형 및 지질 환경을 적극적으로 활용한 지역민들의 지혜는 갈재 옛길에 우수한 자연 경관적 가치를 부여하고 있다. 지역민들은 암편을 활용하여 포장 도로를 조성하였고, 배수관과 제방을 통해도로의 안정성을 높였다. 아울러, 복층 구조와 회전 교차로를 조성하여 험난한 지형 조건을 극복하고 높은 통행량을수용하였다. 갈재 옛길의 우수한 자연 경관적 가치를 바탕으로 차별화된 정보를 제공하고 새로운 프로그램을 개발한다면 갈재 옛길이 여러 각도로 재해석되고 다양한 방법으로 활용될 수 있는 배경이 될 것이며, 본 연구의 결과가 향후 갈재 옛길을 보호하고 지속적으로 활용하기 위한 기초 자료를 제공해줄 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.
The Samnam-daero Galjae Pass is a mountain path from Jeongeup-si, Jeollabuk-do to Jangseong-gun, Jeollanam-do. The Galjae pass has been recognized as the most symbolic pass in the Honam region, and many stories handed down through old documents and poems indicate the historical value of the Galjae pass. In addition, the wisdom of the local people using the geomorphic and geological environment gives the value of the natural landscape to the Galjae pass. People created a sturdy paved road using gravel and increased the stability of the road through drainage pipes and embankments. Moreover, a double-layer structure and a roundabout, which have both the structure and function of modern roads, were created to overcome rough topographic conditions and accommodate high traffic volume. The results of this study will be a background for reinterpreting the Samnam-daero Galjae Pass from various perspective and using it in various ways and are expected to provide basic data for protection and continuous use.
