손창섭 단편소설의 주요 인물들은 거의 다 특이하고 부정적인 양상을 보이는 것이 특징이다. 그들은 끝까지 공동체 내에서 수용 가능한 인물이 되지 못하고 주변인 혹은 외부인이 되어버린다. 이들을 현실을 회피하기만 하는 수동적이고 부정적인 인물이라고 볼 수도 있지만, 그들이 공동체 내에서 수동적으로 밀려나기만 한 것이 아니라 능동적으로 자신의 삶에 대한 하나의 ‘관점’을 보유한 채 스스로 그러한 삶을 ‘선택’했다는 점에서 재해석해 볼 여지도 분명 있어 보인다. 그들은 주어진 환경을 적극적으로 개선하려는 의지를 보여주지는 않지만 이 세계에 결코 동의하지 않는다는 것을 ‘아무것도 하지 않음’으로써 ‘낯선 모습으로 존재함’으로써 분명하게 보여준다. 이러한 관점을 갖게 된 배경과 내력에 주목해 보자면 자연히 그들의 소년기적 모습을 떠올리지 않을 수 없다. 그간의 연구들은 이미 어른이 된 인물들의 특성에 주목하여 그 주변과 사회적 맥락들을 살폈다면 이 글은 그 연구 대상의 폭을 좁혀 ‘소년’들에 주목한 글이다. 그들이 어떠한 성장 배경을 거쳐 자신만의 관점을 보유한 채 ‘다른 어른’이 될 수 있었는지를 살피는 것이다. 소년들은 소위 ‘어른들의 세계’에서 받아들여질 만한 성장을 거부하는데, 이는 가족로맨스를 가로지르는 모습을 통해 드러난다. 그들은 ‘아버지의 부재’를 대신 채워나가려는 욕망 대신에 ‘아버지의 자리’를 영원히 비워두고자 한다. 그리고 소년들은 그 상태로 주변이나 외부로 밀려나간 채 ‘낯선 자’가 되어 공동체의 균열을 야기한다. 그들이 점하고 있는 자리의 속성상 공동체에서 고립되기 쉽지만 소년들은 ‘연대’를 통해 ‘어른들의 세계’에 대응하는 모습을 보인다. 이러한 소년들의 모습을 통해 손창섭의 인물들이 표면적으로는 수동적이고 현실 회피적으로 보이지만 사실은 능동적이고 적극적으로 자신만의 관점을 보유하려고 노력한 인물형이라는 것을 알 수 있다.
Main characters in Son Chang-seop’s short stories are mostly characterized by negative as well as peculiar aspects. In fact, they end up becoming an outsider failing to be a person acceptable in a community. They can be regarded as a passive and negative person only avoiding their reality; however, clearly, it seems to be needed to analyze it again in that they were not pushed out of the community passively but maintained their own particular ‘view’ about life actively and ‘chose’ to live like that themselves. Although they did not show their intention to improve the given environment aggressively, they gave a distinctive sign of being never willing to agree with the world by ‘doing nothing’ and ‘existing as a strange being’. Focusing on the background and history that made them have that kind of standpoint, we can never miss to recall their boyhood naturally. Advanced studies have examined the surroundings and social context paying attention to the features of the characters that have already become adults, but this study focuses on ‘boys’ narrowing the range of study subjects. It is to look into how they have turned out to be ‘different adults’ while retaining their own perspective in what sort of growth background. The boys refuse to grow in a way acceptable to the so-called ‘world of adults’, and this is revealed through the aspects of crossing family romance. They intend to vacate ‘the spot of a father’ forever instead of having desire to fill in ‘the absence of a father’. Moreover, while being pushed out to either a marginal or outside spot as they are, the boys become ‘a stranger’ and bring about collision in the community. Due to the attributes of the spot they occupy, they are apt to be isolated from the community; however, through ‘union’, they show the aspect to cope with ‘the world of adults’. With such aspects of boys, Son Chang-seop’s characters look passive and escapistic superficially, but in fact, they can be evaluated as a type of persons who strive to keep their own position both actively and positively.
