이 연구의 목적은 만해 한용운의 불교적·사회적 실천을 ‘근대 불교적 가치의 실현’이라는 맥락에서 이해하는 데에 있다. 이 목적은 종교인의 활동에 대해 종교적 가치의 실현이라는 맥락에서 조명할 필요가 있다는 관점에 근거한 것이다. 그리고 이 목적은 ‘불교와 무관해 보이는 만해의 사회적 실천도 불교적 가치의 실현이라는 맥락으로 조명하여, 만해에 대한 분절적 이해를 해소’하려는 의도를 담고 있다. 주요 연구 내용은 ‘만해의 지적 흐름(Ⅱ장), 불교적 실천과 가치(Ⅲ장), 사회적 실천과 가치(Ⅵ장)’로 구성된다. 이 내용은 만해가 중층적인 지적 흐름(유교·불교·근대지)을 토대로 불교적·사회적 차원에서 실천했고, 근대 불교적 가치의 실현이라는 부분이 이러한 실천들을 관통한다는 이야기 구조를 갖는다. 이 연구에서 주목한 부분은 다음과 같다. 첫 번째는 만해의 지적 흐름(‘유교, 불교, 근대지 차원’)이 중층적 또는 복합적 사유를 구성한다는 점이다. 다만, 조선불교유신론이후 유교적 사유를 명확히 드러내기는 쉽지 않다. 두 번째는 만해에게 자유·평등·구세 개념이 불교와 근대 사회의 접점이 되는 근대 불교적 가치였다는 점이다. 세 번째는 만해의 불교적·사회적 실천이 근대 불교적 가치의 실현을 위한 것이었고, 특히 사회적 실천은 자유·평등·구세 개념을 독립· 평화·해방론으로 확장해 구세론으로 귀결된다는 점이다. 만해의 사회적 실천에 근대 불교적 가치의 실현이라는 맥락을 부여하면, 만해의 활동을 불교의 맥락에서 통합적으로 이해할 수 있다. 이 연구가 종교인의 사회적 활동을 종교적 가치의 실현이라는 맥락에서 이해하는 데에 기여하기를 기대한다.
The purpose of this study is to understand Han Yong-un (hereafter Manhae)'s Buddhistic and social practices in the context of "the realization of modern Buddhistic values." This purpose is based on the perspective that the activities of religious people need to be illuminated in the context of the realization of religious values. The main contents of this study are divided into "Manhae's Intellectual Currents (Chapter II), Buddhistic Practices and Values (Chapter III), Social Practices and Values (Chapter VI)". This table of contents contains the structure that Manhae practiced at the Buddhistic and social dimensions based on his complex intellectual currents (Confucianism, Buddhism, and Modernism), and that these practices can be understood in the context of the realization of modern Buddhistic values. This study tried to elucidate the following aspects. The first is that Manhae's thoughts were complex, intertwined with Confucianism, Buddhism, and modernity. Second, Manhae's notions of freedom, equality, and salvation were modern Buddhistic values that mediated Buddhism and modern society. Third, Manhae's Buddhistic and social practices were for the realization of modern Buddhistic values. Moreover, Manhae's social practices lead to Buddhistic salvationism as the concepts of freedom, equality, and salvation are expanded to the concepts of independence, peace, and liberation. With this study focusing on the realization of modern Buddhistic values, it is expected that Manhae's various practices will be understood in the context of Buddhism.
