이 논문은 현대 세계의 대표적인 평화사상가들인 조영식과 이케다 다이사쿠의 평화사상의 기초를 천착한다. 이 두 평화옹호가들이 그들의 평화사상에 대한 기초로서 인간중심주의를 공통적으로 가지고 있는 점에 주목한다. 이들은 평화에 대한 성찰에 있어서 그 출발점으로서 인간이라는 요소에 주의를 기울임으로써 인간중심주의라는 측면에서 상호 수렴하는 모습을 보여준다. 조영식은 인간에게 있어서 신체, 정신, 그리고 인격이라는 세 가지 요소에 주의를 기울여 세계 평화 문제의 접근에 인간중심주의를 제시한다. 이케다 다이사쿠는 그의 인간에 대한 이해를 법화경에서 도출하는데 인간이 본래적으로 갖추고 있는 깨달음의 본성에 주목한다. 이러한 평화사상을 바탕으로 조영식은 교육사업에 투신하고 밝은사회운동을 창설, 지도하였다. 이케다 다이사쿠도 교육사업에 헌신하고 국제창가학회를 이끌었다. 또한 조영식은 유엔 세계평화의 날 지정에 주도적인 역할을 하여 핵위협을 방지하였고 이케다 다이사쿠는 핵무기철폐국제운동(ICAN)을 통해 유엔 핵무기금지조약 체결에 중요한 역할을 하였다. 따라서 조영식과 이케다 다이사쿠의 인간중심주의에 기초한 평화 사상은 지속적으로 국제사회에 귀중한 영감의 원천이 될 것이다.
This article explores the basis of peace thoughts of both Young Seek Choue and Daisaku Ikeda as prominent peace thinkers in the contemporary world. It argues that these two peace-advocates have humanism or human-centrism in common as basis of their peace thoughts. They paid keen attention to the dimension of human beings as the starting point of their reflection on peace in human society. Young Seek Choue sees three key elements in human beings and put forward human-centrism in approaching the issue of peace in the world. Daisaku Ikeda draws his understanding of human beings from the Lotus Sutra which emphasizes that all the creatures and, human beings in particular, are equipped with the foundation or nature of enlightenment. These two thinkers went into educational sectors, establishing a variety of educational institutions. In addition, these two peace-leaders led international NGOs such as Brighter Society Movement(GCS) and Soka Gakkai International respectively. They engaged in international peace movements, focused on the prevention of future nuclear war. Thus, the peace vision of both Young Seek Choue and Daisaku Ikeda based on humancentrism are expected to become the perennial inspiration for world peace.
