오늘날 인류 사회는 전대미문의 문명사적 위기에 직면해 있다. 전지구적으로 심화되고 있는생태학적 위기와 더불어 정치·사회적 및 경제적 위기가 21세기 문명을 뒤덮고 있다. 때문에문명의 ‘거대한 전환(great transformation)’이 긴급하게 요청된다는 목소리들이 충만하다. 하지만, 다양하게 주장되고 제시된 문명 전환의 요청들은 그 실현을 위한 글로벌 거버넌스의 연대로 이어질 수 있는 설득력있는 서사와 담론으로연결되지 못하고 있으며, 따라서 (세계)시민사회 또한 참여와 실천의 동학을 확보하지 못하고있다. 그 주된 원인은 인류 문명의 위기를 지속적으로 초래하고 있는 현존 문명 패러다임이 정당화해 온 이분법적 생태관과 이에 기초한 제반가치와 인식의 패러다임을 돌파할 수 있는 초월적 가치관과 지평에 대한 지구적 수준의 공감과이에 기초한 전환적 담론, 곧 ‘초월적’ 생태 문명의 담론이 부재하기 때문이다. 이 초월적 생태 문명으로의 전환은 칼 야스퍼스적 의미의 기축시대(Axial Age)의 새로운(제2의) 촉발을 크게함의한다. 이것이 바로 전일적 생태 문명으로의전환을 추동할 수 있는 종교의 가능성에 대한종교 사회학적 상상력을 자극한다.
Today, warnings about the catastrophe of Earth civilization due to the ecological crises caused by climate change are overflowing. However, most of the efforts to resolve the ecological crises have not been linked to plausible effective narratives and discourses leading to solidarity with global governance. As a result, (global) civil society, governments and corporations around the world have not sufficiently secured the dynamics of participation and practice in climate behavior. The main reason or cause is due to the existing civilization paradigm justified by the dichotomous and mechanical ecology perspective and its paradigm of values and perceptions which continuously causes the crisis of human civilization and, at the same time, hides the ecological truth. A global level of empathy for transcendental values and horizons that can break through these limits or limitations and a strong transformation discourse based on it are required. This is a discourse of ‘transcendental’ ecological civilization, which requires reconsideration of the significance of the religious or spiritual dimension as a source of transcendental awareness or horizon. More fundamentally, the transformation to a holistic ecological civilization implies a reflexive reconsideration of the theme of the new (second) Axial Age in terms of Karl Jaspers’ concept.
