광주의 5월을 이야기하는 소설들의 주된 모티프가 살아남은 자의 죄의식과 부끄러움을 이야기하는 것이었다. 본고에서 다룬 광주의 복수를 이야기하는 세 편의 장편소설은 광주 서사의 폭을 새롭게 확장하는 의미가 있다. 광주의 5월을 복수 서사를 중심으로 그려낸 송기숙의 『오월의 미소』, 김경욱의 『야구란 무엇인가』 그리고 이해경의 『사슴 사냥꾼의 당겨지지 않은 방아쇠』를 중심으로 이들 소설에 나타난 복수의 의미를 살펴보았다. 송기숙의 『오월의 미소』는 미진한 법적 처벌을 대신하는 정당한 처벌로서의 복수로 보았다. 김경욱의 『야구란 무엇인가』는 표면적으로는 복수에 실패하는 서사이지만 오히려 그 실패로 진정한 의미의 복수를 완성했다. 또한 이해경의 『사슴 사냥꾼의 당겨지지 않은 방아쇠』에서의 복수는 성공하기 어려우며 가능하지 않을 것 같지만 그럼에도 복수를 꿈꾸는 서사는 복수에 대한 작가의 의지가 반영된 것이다. 앞으로 복수 서사 이외에도 새로운 방식의 5월 소설들이 나타나기를 기대한다.
The main motif of the stories about the May 18th was to talk about the guilt and shame of the survivors. The three novels dealing with the revenge of Gwangju dealt with in this paper have the meaning of newly expanding the width of the Gwangju narrative. The three novels depicting the May 18th with the revenge narratives are Song Ki-sook’s Smile of May, Kim Kyung-wook’s What is Baseball, and Lee Hae-kyung’s The Deer Hunter’s Unpulled Trigger. We looked at the meaning of revenge in In Song Ki-sook’s Smile of May, it was viewed as revenge as a legitimate punishment in place of insufficient legal punishment. In Kim Kyung-wook’s What is Baseball, he said that he failed to get revenge, but rather completed his revenge in the true sense with that failure. And the story of revenge in Lee Hae-kyung’s The Deer Hunter’s Unpulled Trigger is difficult to succeed, and even if it is clearly not possible, the narrative dreaming of revenge reflects the author’s will for revenge. In addition to revenge narratives, May stories are expected to change in a new way will appear in the future.
