본 연구는 효의 서사로 읽혀 왔던 심청전을 ‘돌봄’이라는 가치로 읽어 보고자 한다. 심청전을 다루는 기존의 논의에서 심청이 아버지의 욕망을 위해 희생하는 것으로 보거나 가부장제의 요구를 따른 것으로 보아 심청의 행위 동인을 외부에서 찾는 경우가 많았다. 문제는 이러한 논리 속에서는 어디에도 심청의 목소리가 끼어들 틈이 없다는 것이다. 따라서 심청의 행위를 돌봄윤리에 기반한 것으로 보아 심청의 주체성을 드러내는 작업은 유의미한 작업이라고 할 수 있다. 돌봄은 인간이라면 누구나 겪을 수밖에 없는 보편적 경험이며, 관계를 맺고 살아가는 모든 인간에게 필요한 가치이다. 인간은 관계 속에서 살아가는 존재이므로 타인을 배려하고 보살피는 돌봄은 그 자체로 높은 가치를 지닌다. 심청은 아버지의 심청일 때에도 돌봄인으로서의 자질을 갖추었지만 돌봄관계 속에서 자신을 배제함으로써 이상적인 돌봄관계를 형성하지 못했다. 용궁이라는 공간에서 아버지와의 분리를 통해 오롯이 자신으로 살아가는 시간을 가진 후 자기 자신까지 돌봄의 대상에 놓았을 때에야 심청은 비로소 사회로까지 확장된 돌봄을 실현할 수 있었다. 그러나 중요한 것은 어느 때의 심청이든 적어도 선택과 결정의 주체였음은 분명하다는 것이다. 심청전은 상생에 대한 이야기이다. 심청은 공동체에 속해 있는 사람들과 함께 잘 살아가고자 한다. 그 범위가 가정에서 사회로, 대상이 아버지에서 백성 전체로 확장된 것일 뿐 의미 자체는 동일하다. 그리고 그것을 가능하게 하는 것이 ‘돌봄’이다. 서사 속에서 돌봄은 심청, 그리고 여성의 목소리를 발견하게 한다. 따라서 돌봄은 여성 억압적인 구조에 균열을 가하는 시도가 될 수 있으며, 나아가 이야기 속 심청이 보여주는 돌봄의 실천은 지금 우리 사회에 함께 살아가는 하나의 방법을 제시해 준다.

This study attempts to read Simcheongjeon, which has been read as a narrative of filial duty, as the value of 'care'. In the existing discussions dealing with Simcheongjeon, Simcheong was often found to be sacrificing for his father's desire or following the demands of the patriarchal system, so he often looked for the drivers of Simcheong's actions from the outside. The problem is that there is no room for Simcheong's voice to intervene in this logic. Therefore, it is a meaningful task to interpret Simcheong's behavior as a care ethics to reveal the subjectivity of Simcheong. Care is a universal experience that anyone can't help but experience, and it is a necessary value for all humans living in relationships. Since humans are beings who live in relationships, caring for and caring for others has a high value in itself. Simcheong had the qualifications as a caregiver even when he was in charge of his father, but he did not form an ideal caring relationship by excluding himself from the caring relationship. Simcheong was finally able to realize the care extended to society only when he had time to live as himself through separation from his father in the space of Yonggung(龍宮). What is important, however, is that it is clear that at any time Simcheong was at least the subject of choice and decision. Simcheongjeon is a story of co-prosperity. Simcheong wants to live well with people who belong to the community. The scope is from home to society, and the object is extended from the father to the entire people, but the meaning itself is the same. And what makes it possible is care. In the narrative, care makes you discover Simcheong, and the voice of a woman. Therefore, care can be an attempt to crack the female oppressive structure, and furthermore, the practice of care shown by Simcheong in the story suggests a way to live together in our society now.
