본 논문은 숙종 연간(1674-1720) 산릉, 봉릉도감의 금속품 제작을 담당했던 노야소(爐冶所)와 야장(冶匠)에 대한 연구이다. 본 논문의 연구 대상인 노야소(爐冶所)는 능 조성이나 건축물 영건에 필요한 각종 철물(鐵物)을 제작하기 위해 마련된 대장간이자 제작공간으로 야장(冶匠)을 포함한 관련 전문 장인들이 차출되어 재료 가공부터 기물 제작까지 일련의 과정을 수행했다. 노야소의 제작을 총괄하는 변수(邊首) 야장 중 경륜이 풍부한 장인이 맡았으며 다른 야장과 함께 철물 제작을 수행했다. 그렇기에 야장은 노야소 내에서 중추적 역할을 담당했다 볼 수 있다. 야장의 제작활동 분석은 그들이 제작한 조선시대 왕실의 능묘 조성 및 건축물 영건 공역에 소비된 철물의 재료와 제작기법 이를 통해 완성된 제작품의 종류와 쓰임을 유기적으로 분석하는데 있어 중요한 자료가 되었다. 숙종 연간 시행된 산릉, 봉릉도감의 노야소에서도 공역에 필요한 각종 장식물과 부재, 도구 등을 제작하였고, 때에 따라 표면 장식도 담당했음을 파악할 수 있었다. 이와 함께 도감에 참여한 야장은 특정 공역만을 수행하는 전문 장인이 있었음을 확인했다. 전문 장인의 참여는 제작품의 정교하고 균일한 품질 유지에 기여한 것으로 추정된다. 이처럼 본 논문에서는 노야소와 소속 장인이었던 야장의 역할을 통해 조선시대 도감의 금속공예품 제작체제 일면을 분석할 수 있었다.
This study is a study on the iron craft workshops and craftsmen who were in charge of making metal crafts when making the tombs of the king and queen during the reign of King Sukjong. The iron craft workshop of the royal tomb construction project, the subject of this thesis, is a space prepared for the production of various crafts. Artisans belonging to this space were in charge of all processes from material processing to completion of crafts. The workshop was headed by an experienced craftsman who worked on the project with other craftsmen. The analysis of the craftsmen who made iron crafts became an important data for organically analyzing the iron materials and manufacturing techniques they used when constructing royal tombs and buildings during the Joseon Dynasty, and the types and uses of finished crafts. It was found that the iron craftworks workshop in the area where the royal tomb was built, which was implemented during the year of King Sukjong, produced various decorations, members, and tools necessary for the project, and was also in charge of decorating the surface of the craftwork in some cases. In addition, it was confirmed that among the craftsmen who participated in the project, there were specialized craftsmen who performed only a specific field. The existence of these craftsmen seems to have contributed to maintaining the uniform quality of the products. As such, in this thesis, it was possible to grasp a part of the metal craft production system in the Joseon royal-led project through the role of the iron craft workshop and the artisans belonging to it.
