<전원일기>는 23년간 방영되었으며 종영된 지 20년이 지난 지금도 여러 케이블 채널과 OTT에서 방송 중이다. 이 연구는 방영된 지 20~40년이 지난 드라마 <전원일기>를 2021년에 다시 보는 이들이 왜 수 십년 전 드라마를 보는지, 예전의 수용과 지금의 수용은 어떤 차이가 있는지, 그리고 <전원일기> 속 시대와 등장인물에 대한 이해는 어떠한지 20~50대 주부 수용자들에 대한 심층 인터뷰를 통해 알아본 것이다. 수용자들은 우선 따뜻함과 깊이에 대한 향수 때문에 <전원일기>를 보고 있었다. 이들은 소소한 에피소드를 통해 가족과 이웃 공동체의 따뜻함을 느끼고, 지금은 사라진 배경과 소품, 혹은 부모님과 함께 드라마를 보던 과거의 자신을 기억하며 향수에 잠겼다. 둘째, 수용자들은 주부라는 상황에서, 혹은 코로나로 휴직하고 외출이 제한되면서 미디어를 접하는 시간이 많아졌고, 자극적이지 않은 이야기를 종일 배경음악처럼 틀어놓고 안정감을 얻고 힐링을 했다. 셋째, 이들은 <전원일기>를 통해 부모 세대 혹은 동세대와 소통하기도 했다. 이들은 <전원일기>가 과거의 이야기라고 인식하며 일정한 거리감을 가지고 받아들였고, 그 거리감 때문에 과도한 몰입이나 감정의 동요 없이 편안하게 볼 수 있다고 말하기도 했다.
“The Country Diary” has been broadcast for 23 years and is still broadcast on several cable channels and OTT 20 years after its end. This study was conducted through in-depth interviews with housewives in their 20s and 50s to find out why those who watch the drama “Country Diary,” which has been aired for 20 to 40 years, watch the drama decades ago, what is the difference between old and current acceptance, and understanding of the generation. First, the interviewers were watching Country Diary because of their nostalgia for warmth and depth. They felt the warmth of their families and neighboring communities through small episodes, and they were nostalgic about the scenery and props that have disappeared now, or themselves in the past when they watched dramas with their parents. Second, interviewers have more time to access the media in a situation where they are housewives, or as they take a leave of absence due to COVID-19 and are restricted from going out. They played non-stimulating stories like background music all day long, gaining stability and healing. Third, they watched “Country Diary” and accepted the generation, the elderly, and the times with ambivalent feelings. They also communicated with his parents’ generation or his contemporaries through “Country Diary”. They accepted “Country Diary” with a sense of distance, calling it a story of the past.
