The Figure in the Carpet has been regarded as one of Henry James’ most ambiguous tales. The Figure in the Carpet is the narrative of a young critic's study on the works of the brilliant novelist Hugh Vereker. The narrator, whose name is never revealed, searches for The Figure in the Carpet, which Vereker tells him cryptically is the key to an appreciation of his books, although it had yet to be discovered. The narrator starts his quest, feverishly scrutinizing Vereker's novel in search of its secret, but can make nothing of it. The Figure in the Carpet is metafiction inspired by James’ experimental process of creative fiction, Which demands upon the writer and the critic or reader. Through this work James demonstrated his continued interest in experimentation. James wrote Vereker as his alter ego, while also including himself as the self-conscious writer and critic in The Figure in the Carpet.
