오늘날의 복잡한 미디어 환경에서는 의도를 가지고 뉴스를 소비하는 경우 외에도 우연히 뉴스를 접하게 되는 우연적 뉴스노출(incidental news exposure)이 빈번하게 발생한다. 이에 선행 연구들은 소셜미디어를 이용하면서 우연히 접하게 된 뉴스가 정치 지식이나 정치 참여 등과어떠한 관계가 있는지 주목해 왔다. 이런 배경에서 본 연구는 소셜미디어에서의 우연적 뉴스노출이 의견이 다른 사람(이견자)들이 올린 게시물에 관여하는 정도에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 살펴보았다. 또한 우연적 뉴스노출이 이견관여에 미치는 영향에서 이견자와의 친밀성 인식을 비롯해 이견자의 전문성 및 예의성 인식의 조절 효과를 검증했다. 분석 결과, 소셜미디어를통해 우연적 뉴스를 많이 접할수록 다른 의견에 반응하고 관여하는 정도가 증가하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 우연적 뉴스노출이 이견관여에 미치는 영향에서 이견자와의 친밀성 인식과 예의성 인식이 이들 관계를 유의미하게 조절하였다. 이러한 결과는 우연적 뉴스노출이 다른 의견을가진 사람들과의 상호작용을 촉진시킴으로써 숙의민주주의 과정에서 긍정적으로 작용할 수 있는 가능성을 제시하고 있으며, 특히 소셜미디어상에서 타인과 친밀한 관계를 유지하고 예의를갖추는 것이 이러한 긍정적인 역할을 높일 수 있다는 것을 의미한다.
In today's complex media environment, in addition to purposeful consumption of news, incidental news exposure also occurs frequently. Researchers have focused on the consequences of incidental news exposure (e.g., political knowledge and political participation). In this context, this study examines how incidental news exposure on social media affects the degree of engagement between individuals and those who hold different opinions. Furthermore，we explored the moderating effects of intimacy, professionalism, and civility evaluations of dissenters between incidental news exposure and engaging with disagreement. Results showed those who frequently stumble upon news via SNS are more active in engaging with disagreement. In addition, perceived intimacy and perceived civility evaluations of dissidents positively moderated this relationship. Suggesting that incidental news exposure has a potentially positive effect in communicating with people who hold different views, especially when the dissident is shown to be more intimate as well as more polite.
