본 논문은 강화길의 단편소설 「손」, 「카밀라」, 「오물자의 출현」, 「화이트 호스」를 분석의 대상으로 삼는다. 위의 작품들에는 ‘알 수 없는 대상’에 대해 두려움을 느끼면서도 그것이 무엇인지 계속해서 알아가기를 주저하지 않는 여성인물들이 등장한다. 서사가 전개됨에 따라 이들은 이질적이고 공포감을 주며 자신을 위협하기도 하는 미지의 대상이 사실은 자기 안에 있는 익숙한 것이었음을 깨닫는다. 나아가 그러한 내면의 발견을 통해 인물들은 부정적인 대상과 자기(自己) 사이의 경계를 가로지르는 수행적 주체로서 이야기를 재구성한다. 이러한 서사 전개 방식을 ‘여성숭고(feminine sublime)적 글쓰기’로 볼 수 있다. 일반적으로 숭고란 ‘남성적인 것’으로서, 미적 대상이 되는 ‘여성적 가치’에 비해 더 완전하고 강력한 감정 또는 그러한 감정을 촉발하는 것으로 여겨져 왔다. 이러한 전통적 숭고 개념에 대항하는 여성숭고 개념에 따르면, ‘여성적인 것’들은 정형화되고 왜곡된 미적 가치 판단에서 벗어나 기괴하고 공포스러운 것을 포괄하는 숭고함의 원천이 된다. 강화길 소설의 여성인물들은 부정적인 소문에 의해 타자화된 ‘비체(abject)’를 조우함으로써 불길한 타자와 자신 간의 경계를 허물어뜨리는 ‘탈경계적 주체’들이라고 할 수 있다.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the narratives of female characters in Kang hwa-gil’s short stories. In the stories, there are female characters who are afraid of ‘the unknown things’ but do not hesitate to find out what they are. As the narrative unfolds, they realize that ‘the unknown thing’ that is odd, uncomfortable, and terrifying was actually what they were familiar with. Furthermore, through such awareness, they reconstruct their stories by crossing the boundaries between the negative objects and themselves. The method of narrative development in these characters can be called ‘the writing of feminine sublime’. In general, the notion of sublime is a ‘male thing’, which has been considered to trigger a more complete and powerful emotion than the ‘feminine value’ that is an aesthetic object. However, according to the concept of feminine sublime, ‘feminine’ is a source of sublime that encompasses the bizarre and terrifying, free of stereotyped and distorted aesthetic value judgments. In summary, the female characters in Kang hwa-gil's novel are trans-boundary subjects, who, through their encounters with abjects typified by negative rumors destroy the boundaries between the ominous others and themselves.
