This study traces the meaning of sᴇʙɢᴇᴏʙᴅᴀ through linguistic analysis and literary interpretation. The lexeme is rarely found in general materials on Korean language history, whereas it frequently appears in classic literary works. In terms of its meaning, the instances found in the literary works are used with quite different meanings, which suggests that the lexeme may have undergone significant changes in its meaning. The meanings of the lexeme can be distinguished into six: ①‘hollow and crispy,’ ②‘timid and weak,’ ③‘unreliable, untrustworthy,’ ④‘incredible, awesome,’ ⑤‘disappointed, regretful,’ and ⑥‘lonely, melancholy.’ Considering that the lexeme appearing in the Middle Korean was used to mean ① and ②, this can be regarded as a rare case in which a state-property adjective developed into two other categories: evaluative adjectives and psychological adjectives. However, there are some questions that have not been answered in this study, such as a question regarding why the lexeme was not in common use and why it was mainly used in literary works. These issues indicate that those in Korean historical linguistics and classical literature should communicate and collaborate with one other more frequently.
