20세기 최고의 SF 흑인여성작가로 불리는 옥타비아 버틀러(Octavia E. Butler)의 『킨드레드』(Kindred)는 100년의 시공간을 오가는 흑인여성 다나(Dana)를 통해 인종, 젠더 뿐 아니라 계급과 타자에 대한 억압의 문제가 노예의 역사 속에서 재현되는 장편소설이다. 파타피직스는 과학적 생각을 바탕으로 한 공상과학을 일컫는 말로 형이상학을 뜻하는 메타피직스(metaphysics)의 패러디이다. 파타피직스는 부조리한 상황을 해석하는 하나의 방법론으로 논리적인 해석이 불가능하지만 실제로 일어나는 상황을 지칭하는 개념이다. 자리는 파타피직스가 사물의 가상성을 표현하는 상상의 과학이라 했는데 여기서 가상성이란 두 개의 현실이 중복되는 가상공간을 의미한다.『킨드레드』의 가상현실 공간은 현재의 물리적 시공간의 제약을 벗어나 현실과는 다른 공간에서 즉 현실세계를 넘어선 파타피직스의 세계를 구현하고 있다. 19세기와 1976년을 오가며 흑인여성 다나는 노예제의 불합리와 모순성이 현재까지 그대로 이어지고 있음을 과거의 현재성으로 재현하고 있다. 과거를 가상공간으로 설정하고 현재를 반영하는 파타피직스 세계는 과거가 현재에 영향을 끼치며 언제나 현재로 존재함을 보여준다. 따라서 파타피직스는 과거와 현재의 배타적 경계가 아닌 두 세계를 통합하는 포함의 연속성으로 소설의 역사적 의미를 찾도록 파타포적 상상력에 실재의 현실성을 결합하고 있다. 파타피직스 철학은 기존관습의 부정과 모순적 현실에 대한 비판의식을 담고 있으며 버틀러는 과거를 가상현실로 만드는 시간여행을 통해 과거와 현재를 공존하게 함으로써 끝나지 않은 과거의 유산을 사실로 직시하도록 파타피직스 세계를 연결한다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 이러한 파티피직스를 통해 가상과 현실이 중첩되었을 때 잘못된 역사에 대한 인식과 책임 그리고 비판의식이 더욱 드러날 수 있음을 탐구하고자 한다.
The Purpose of this paper is to analyze the absurdity of slavery and the freedom of black women through the concept of pataphysics in Octavia E. Butler's Kindred. Butler uses time travel that connects the past and the present to focus on blood ties and criticize unending slavery. Dana, a black woman, faces the painful reality of slavery through the movement of space and time. In this paper, as this historical slave narrative is rewritten by time travel, the violent nature of actual history is starkly exposed in the pataphysics world. Pataphysics is a methodology that interprets irrational situations, and although logical interpretation is impossible, it is a concept that refers to the situations that actually occur. The pataphysics world of Kindred is a mixture of past and present, beyond the limits of current physical space and time. Dana can meet her own kindred here and have the experience of truly understanding them. To sum up, in order to reveal the absurdity and contradiction of slavery in the past, Butler brings Dana, who lives in the present, back to the past and experiences slavery first-hand, showing how important it is to properly inform future generations of the truth of history and gain freedom.
