본 연구에서는 한애순 창 <심청가>를 대상으로 계면조의 변청에 대해 살펴보았다. 한애순 창 <심청가>의 전체 63개 대목을 채보하여 악조를 분석하고, 여기서 변청이 사용된 12개 계면조 대목을 대상으로 변청 유형과 이의 작동 방식을 살펴보았다. 그 결과를 간단히 정리해보면 다음과 같다. 먼저, 한애순 창 <심청가>의 계면조 대목에서는 완전5도 위, 완전4도 위, 장3도 아래, 감3도 아래 변청이 사용되었다. 이 중에서 특히 장3도 아래, 감3도 아래 변청은 지금까지 학계에 보고된 바 없었던 유형들로, 한애순 창 <심청가>에서 처음으로 확인되었다. 이들은 독특한 특징을 보였는데, 구체적으로 공통음의 매개 없이 변청한다거나, 한 장단 내에서 2회 연속 변청하고 대목 내에서 반복구처럼 사용되기도 했다. 다음으로 변청 방식에서 나타나는 특징은 크게 세 가지였다. 첫째, 계면조 변청은 공통음을 매개로 변청을 시도하는 ‘공통음 변청’과 공통음 없이 바로 변청하는 ‘직접 변청’으로 구분되었다. 완전5도 위, 완전4도 위 변청에서는 공통음 변청만이 사용되었고, 장3도 아래, 감3도 아래 변청에서는 직접 변청이 자주 사용되었다. 둘째, 변청 과정에서 계면조의 모든 구성음이 공통음으로 선택될 수 있었다. 셋째, 공통음은 변청 유형에 따라 다르게 선택되지만, 어떤 음이 선택되든 목적조의 mi 또는 la로 이동했다. 끝으로 한애순 창 <심청가>의 계면조 변청 양상을 같은 서편제에 속하는 정권진 창과 비교해 본 결과, 변청 유형의 종류와 선호도, 변청 방식에서 공통점과 차이점을 보였다. 이를 통해 계면조 변청이 판소리의 여러 제나 바디 간의 관계를 드러낼 수 있는 효과적인 수단이 될 수 있을 것으로 보았다.
This study examined the modulation of Gyemyeonjo in <Simcheongga> by Han Ae-soon. The Gyemyeonjo of 12 songs were examined to explore the types of modulation and how they work. A brief summary of the results is as follows: First, the types of modulation were divided into perfect 5th degree above, perfect 4th degree above, major 3rd degree below, and diminished 3rd degree below. Among these, major 3rd degree below and diminished 3rd degree below are techniques first discovered in <Simcheongga> by Han Ae-soon and have unique properties. Next, three main characteristics appeared in the modulation method. First, Gyemyeonjo modulation was largely divided into “pivot not modulation,” which attempts to change with a common tone as a medium, and “direct modulation,” which does not use a common tone as a medium. Third, although the tones selected from the original key differ depending on the type of modulation, they move to the target key mi or la, regardless of which tone is selected. Finally, after comparing the pattern of modulation in Han Ae-soon's <Simcheongga> with the version of Jeonggeon-jin belonging to the same Seopyeonje, certain similarities and differences in the types, preferences, and methods of modulation could be observed. Through this, an examination of the modulation of Gyemyeonjo was considered to be an effective means of revealing the relationships of various pansori.
