딱지본 소설은 대중을 대상으로 시도된 상업적 출판물이다. 이때 대중은 하나의 균질한 집단이 아니기에, 대중에 대한 인식과 기대, 상상력에 따라 딱지본 소설들 또한 다양한 모습으로 존재한다. 딱지본 소설 전반에 대한 인식 재고뿐만 아니라 개별 작품들에 대한 논의 역시 필요한 이유이다. 본고는 기존 정전 중심의 작품만으로 그 전모를 파악하기 어려운 식민지 시기 대중의 욕망과 삶을 딱지본 소설 『비행녀사』를 통해 구체적으로 살펴보고자 하였다. 이 작품의 주인공인 춘자는 결혼을 강요하는 부모의 말을 거역하고 집을 나온다. 그녀는 중국에서 비행 기술을 배우고 마적을 퇴치하여 부와 명예 모두 거머쥐며, 사랑하는 사람 또한 만난다. 하지만 좀 더 세밀히 살펴보면 춘자가 이룩해낸 성취는 그녀가 민족의 일원이면서 동시에 온건한 신여성이기에 가능한 것이라는 사실이 포착된다. 『비행녀사』 속 현실에 대한 인식은 분명 한계점을 지니고 있지만 당대 여러 소설과 다른 지점 또한 존재한다. 연애와 예술 또는 연애와 혁명 등으로 사적 세계와 공적 세계를 구분하고 시기별로 각각에 가치 평가를 달리 했던 지식인들의 사고와 달리, 대중을 겨냥한 딱지본 소설 속에서 재현된 근대는 두 세계를 포섭하고 절충하려는 움직임이 드러나기도 하기 때문이다. 이처럼 딱지본 소설에는 근대적이면서도 전근대적인 상상력이 혼종되어 있으며, 때로는 근대를 넘어서는 상상력도 깃들어 있다. 이 모든 상상력은 딱지본 소설의 주요 독자였던 대중의 욕망과 연결되며, 욕망의 한계선은 이야기가 나왔던 과거뿐만 아니라 지금 우리의 삶 또한 가리키고 있다. 그러므로 딱지본 소설은 새로운 시대의 욕망에 맞춰 새롭게 다시 쓰여야 할 텍스트이기도 하다.
Six pence pop novels are commercial publications targeting the public. At this time, the public is not a homogeneous group. Six pence pop novels also exist in various forms depending on their perception, expectation, and imagination toward the public. Therefore, it is necessary not only to reconsider the perception of the six pence pop novel as a whole, but also to discuss individual works. It is difficult to grasp the desires and lives of the public during the colonial period only with the existing famous works. This article tried to look into this in detail through six pence pop novel “Flying Lady(飛行女史)”. Chun-ja, the main character of the novel, disobeys parental insistence on marriage and leaves the house. She learns flight techniques in China, defeats mounted bandits, gains wealth and honor, and meets loved ones as well. However, a closer look reveals that Chun-ja’s achievements are only possible because she is a member of the nation and a moderate new woman. The perception of reality in “Flying Lady” clearly has limitations, but there are also different points from many novels of the time. Intellectual people distinguished between the private world and the public world through love and art or love and revolution, and evaluated each of them differently. The modern times reproduced in the six pence pop novels reveal a movement to embrace and compromise these two worlds. As such, six pence pop novels are mixed with modern and premodern imaginations, and sometimes they contain imagination beyond modern times. This imagination is linked to the desire of the public, who was the main reader of six pence pop novels. And the limit of desire is meaningful in that it points not only to the past when the story came out, but also to our lives now. Therefore, the six pence pop novels are also a text that needs to be rewritten according to the desires of the new era.
