정여립은 조선 당쟁사를 논하는 데 있어서 꼭 경유해야 할 인물이다. 정여립 이야기는 그의 출생지 전주, 활동지 김제, 사망지 진안을 중심으로 전승되고 있다. 세 지역의 변별된 지역성은 정여립의 역모와 기축옥사에 대한 역사적 해석뿐만 아니라 기층 사람들의 이야기 구성과 전승에도 큰 영향을 주었다. 전주는 조선 왕조의 어향(御鄕)으로서 정치적 상징성이 강한 곳이고, 사림(士林)들도 서인 계열이 주류를 이루었다. 이런 전주의 지역성은 구비전승되는 이야기 속의 역적 정여립을 부정적 인물로 그려내고 있다. 반면 김제는 만경평야와 벽골제로 풍요의 지역으로 인식되지만, 이면에는 지배 세력의 강한 억압과 착취가 있었던 곳이다. 억압과 착취는 궁극에는 저항과 변혁의 힘을 만들어내기도 한다. 김제 사람들은 정여립의 부정적 인물상을 수정하는 이야기와 담론을 구성했으며, 나아가 <오누이 힘내기>형 설화를 통해서 정여립을 비극적 영웅으로 형상화했다. 진안은 ‘장군 정여립’이 천반산의 지명 이야기와 결착되어 전승되는 양상을 보였다. 하지만 정여립이 결착된 <아기장수>형 설화와 <오누이 힘내기>형 설화는 진안 지역에서 발견되지 않는다. 대신 신원충이라는 인물이 <아기장수>형 설화와 <오누이 힘내기>형 설화에 결착되어 이야기의 주인공으로 등장한다. 신원충은 진안 사람들이 ‘역적’ 정여립의 이름 기호를 기피하는 현상과 체제 변혁성을 지닌 ‘장군 정여립’을 기억하려는 현상이 착종되어 나타난 ‘기표의 전이’의 결과였다. 진안 사람들은 정여립과 신원충으로 이어지는 이야기 구성과 전승을 통해서 지역 역사가 지닌 아픔을 기억하고 치유하려고 했다.
Jeong Yeo-rip is a figure that we must pass through in discussing Joseon History of the Factional Strifes. Jeong Yeo-rip’s stories are handed down centering on his birthplace of Jeonju, his place of activities Kimje, and his death place of Jinan. The distinct locality of the three regions had a great influence not only on the historical interpretation of Jeong Yeo-rip's treason and Gichuk Purge, but also on his story composition and transmission of the people of the lower classes. Jeonju was the royal hometown (御鄕) of the Joseon dynasty, and it was a place with strong political symbolism, and the Sarim (士林) were also dominated by Subordinate People. This locality of Jeonju depicts Jeong Yeo-rip, the rebel in the story passed down orally, as a negative figure. On the other hand, Kimje is recognized as a region of abundance with the Mangyeong Plains and Byeokgolje, but behind it was the strong oppression and exploitation of the ruling powers. Repression and exploitation ultimately create forces of resistance and transformation. The people of Kimje composed stories and discourses to correct the negative figure image of Jeong Yeo-rip, and furthermore, Jeong Yeo-rip was portrayed as a tragic hero through “The Strength Trial between Brother and Sister” type tales. In Jinan, the aspect was shown that ‘General Jeong Yeo-rip’ was handed down as combined with the story of the place name of Cheonbansan mountain. However, “The Mighty Baby” type tales and “The Strength Trial between Brother and Sister” type tales settled with Jeong Yeo-rip are not found in the region of Jinan. Instead, a figure named Shin Won-chung appears as the main character of the story by bonding to “The Mighty Baby” type tales and “The Strength Trial between Brother and Sister” type tales. Shin Won-chung was the result of the ‘transfer of signifiers’ that occurred after the phenomenon of trying to remember ‘General Jeong Yeo-rip’ with systemic transformational powers combined with the phenomenon of Jinan people avoiding the name sign of ‘rebel’ Jeong Yeo-rip. Jinan people tried to remember and heal the pain of its regional history through story composition and transmission leading to Jeong Yeo-rip and Shin Won-chung.
