이 논문은 나그함마디 문서에서 영혼의 여행이 영지주의 그리스도교의 신학에 끼친 영향을 사상사 비평법과 종교사적 비교연구로 고찰하는 것이다. 필자는 먼저 어윈 로데의 『영혼』을 중심으로 고대 그리스인이 가졌던 영혼과 불멸 사상의 관계를 논한다. 특히, 로데에 의하면, 영혼제의는 영혼불멸과 영혼의 미래 삶에 대한 뿌리를 제공하는데, 구체적인 영혼불멸 사상은 디오니소스 제의와 오르페우스교를 거치면서 더욱 확고해진다. 소크라테스도 오르페우스교의 영향을 받았고, 플라톤은 소크라테스의 사상에다 오르페우스교의 전통을 보다 체계화해서 그의 영혼론을 확립하게 된다. 그는 인간의 탄생이 영혼의 하강과 함께 시작되고, 인간 육체의 죽음은 새로운 환생을 위한 영혼의 여행이 되기 때문에, 인간의 구원은 영혼의 윤회를 멈추게 하는 존재의 지식을 통해서 가능하게 된다고 주장한다. 나그함마디 문서에서 모나드(하느님)는 눈에 보이지 않는 존재이지만 모든 것의 근원이 되며 이 모나드로부터 인간의 영혼도 방출된다. 모나드처럼 눈에 보이지 않는 이 영혼이 인간이라는 개체 존재와 함께 있다고 믿기 때문에 영혼은 신(god)보다도 종교사에서 더 많은 관심을 받는다. 완전하고 선한 모나드(하느님)는 인간 영혼을 방출하여 이 세상에 보내고, 또 그 영혼을 다시 불러들여 심판함으로써 공의를 세운다. 나그함마디 문서의 대표적인 문서인 『요한 비밀서』, 『도마복음』, 『도마행전』, 『영혼에 관한 주석』, 『이집트인의 복음』은 바로 이러한 영혼의 여행을 자세하게 보여준다. 그러므로 나그함마디 문서는 모나드의 선재성과 불멸성을 기반으로 인간 영혼이 모나드로부터 나와서 다시 모나드로 돌아가는 영혼의 여행을 잘 드러내고, 이를 통해서 인간이 본디 의미의 ‘하느님의 자녀’가 되고, 궁극적으로는 하느님과 하나가 된다는 사상을 제안한다.
By using history of ideas and the method of comparative religion, this paper studies the influence of the journey of the soul on the theology of Gnostic Christianity in the Nag Hammadi Library. I discuss the relationship between the soul and the notion of immortality of the ancient Greeks, centering on Irwin Rhode’s Soul. In particular, according to Rohde, the ritual of the soul provides a root for the immortality of the soul and the future life of the soul. The concrete idea of the immortality of the soul becomes more clearer through Orphism and Platonism. The monad (God) in the Nag Hammadi library is an invisible entity, but it is the source of all things, from which the human soul is also released. Like the monad, because this invisible soul becomes an individual human being, it receives more attention than that of the god in the history of religion. The perfect and good monad establishes justice by releasing human souls to this world, and by calling them back to be judged. This soul’s journey is demonstrated in The Apocryphon of John, The Prayer of Apostle Paul, the Gospel of Thomas, Acts of Thomas, The Exegesis on the Soul, Authoritative Teaching, and The Gospel of the Egyptians in detail. Therefore, based on the pre-existence and immortality of the monad, they reveal that the human soul comes out of the monad and returns to it, which suggests that humans become children of God in the original meaning, and ultimately the idea of becoming one with God.
