귀신의 존재는 우리 인식의 결과물로써 개인이나 집단 공동체 내 특정 경험이 그 기저에 자리한다. 이러한 측면에서 귀신 존재의 분석은 우리 사회, 문화적 현상을 살펴 이해할 수 있는 하나의 지표이다. 귀신이 표출하는 사회, 문화적 지표로서의 의미는 다양하겠으나, 그중에서 사회적 약자, 소외된 자들의 억압된 욕망과 그 지점이 맞물려 있는 사실에 관심을 두고 살펴보았다. 귀신이 발생시키는 공포의 이면에는 소외된 자들의 좌절된 욕망이 내재하며, 이 욕망과 공포의 실체화 및 재생산은 우리 사회 구성원들의 상호작용을 통해 구체적 실체를 얻는다. 이러한 관점에서 영상콘텐츠에 재현된 소외된 자들의 공포와 욕망은 평탄치 못한 삶에서 오는 살다 죽은 존재라는 인식이 깃들어 있다. 이 영상콘텐츠에 재현된 귀신은 인간에 빙의하여 식욕과 폭력성을 보인다. 이는 우리의 인식 속 귀신은 배고픈 존재라는 의미가 내재한다. 이러한 측면에서 귀신은 배고픈 존재이며 그 죽음이 평탄치 못한 까닭으로 한을 가진 존재가 된다. 따라서 귀신이 인간의 육체를 잠식했을 때, 식욕과 폭력성의 증가가 나타나는 결말로 이어진다. 그리고 자신의 욕망이 좌절된 그 공간에 나타나 인간에게 위해를 가하는 존재로 형상화된다. 영상콘텐츠에서 재현되는 귀신 존재는 타자화된, 우리 사회 공동체의 외부적 존재이다. 이에 외부적 존재는 사회를 혼란하게 만든다. 따라서 사회 질서의 회복을 위해서는 제거되어야 할 존재이다. 그러나 우리 사회 지배질서로부터 소외되고 객체가 될 수밖에 없는 존재들이 표출하는 사회적 의미에 대해 생각해 볼 필요성이 있다.

The existence of ghosts, the outcomes from our perceptions, are based on specific experiences in individuals or group communities. In this regard, an analysis on the existence of them is an indicator with which it is possible to examine our society and cultural phenomena. Although the society and a cultural indicator, expressed by ghosts may have a variety of implications, this study focused on the fact that they are associated with the oppressed desire of the socially disadvantaged and the alienated. The frustrated desire of the alienated is embedded behind the horror brought about by ghosts, and both desire and horror are embodied and reproduced by the interaction among the members of our society. From this perspective, such horror and desire of the alienated reproduced in image contents involve the recognition that they might have underwent unfavorable life before they died. The ghosts represented in the image contents show appetite and violence as they possess human beings. This implies that the ghosts perceived by us feel hungry. In this respect, they come to bear a grudge, because they are hungry and underwent unfavorable death. When they encroach human body, their appetite and violence are, therefore, amplified. Then, they are embodied as the beings inflicting injury on human beings, after they appear in the space in which their desire was frustrated. The ghosts represented in image contents are otherized beings external to our social community. Such external beings cause confusion in the society. They thus should be removed to recover a social order. It is, however, necessary to consider the social implications expressed by the beings who cannot but be alienated and objectified by a ruling order in our society.
