스티글레르에게 기술은 인간동물을 구성하는 특성의 전부가 된다. 인간은 곧 기술적 존재이다. 기술은 인간의 생물학적 조건을 변경시킬 정도로 절대적인 지위를 획득하고 있다. 물론 기술 환경의 가속화는 자본주의적 생산양식 체계와 무관하지 않다. 이 체계가 궁극적으로 이르고자 하는 이윤의 극대화는 기술혁신을 의미하고, 그것을 극명하게 드러내는 것이 오늘날의 데이터 경제이다. 이러한 디지털 기술의 시대는 인류세라는 암울한 상황과 맞물려 전 세계에 재앙의 그림자를 드리우고 있다. 인류세는 종말을 향한 엔트로피 양의 보편적인 증가를 의미한다. 스티글레르에 따르면 인류세는 세 가지의 층위 ―생물권(biosphère), 생물다양성(biodiversité)과 디지털 기술 속의 인간―에서 일어나고 있다. 새로운 사유(지식)에 의한 새로운 사회 모형의 제시가 이처럼 요청된 적이 없었다. 스티글레르는 지식의 외재화를 보편화하는 디지털 기술에 전례 없는 파르마콘적 특징 -치료성과 해악성-이 있다고 생각한다. 무의식적 에너지의 조작을 통해 소비자본주의가 생산해왔던 충동적이고 규격화된 인간은 디지털 기술 시대에 이르러서 자신의 의식의 흐름 ―파지(rétention), 주의력, 예지(protention) ―을 박탈당할 위기에 놓인다. 인간은 자연스럽게 사유의 존재에서 ‘바보짓’(bêtise)의 대상으로 전락한다. 스티글레르가 ‘디스럽션’(disruption)과 ‘프롤레타리아화’(prolétariation)라고 명명하는 기술의 해악성은 개인과 집단이 고유한 욕망을 실현할 수 있는 가능성을 차단한다. 알고리즘 거버넌스는 경제성이라는 미명 하에 사회 구성원들의 자발적인 복종을 어렵지 않게 이끌어내고 있다. 그러므로 디지털 기술의 파르마콘적 특성에 대항해서 새로운 삶의 방식을 발명해야 한다. 이는 오직 되찾은 지성의 힘에 의해서만 가능하다. 이 힘은 새로운 정치적·경제적·산업적 모형의 구축을 가능하게 할 것이다. 사유의 힘은 ‘방향을 전환하는 힘’(bifurcation)이다. 사유는 예상 밖의 갈래 길을 만드는 능력이다. 부엔트로피를 생산하는 이러한 능력들의 총체만이 새로운 기술 환경과 생태적 재앙에 맞설 수 있는 길이다.
