코미디에는 사회상황과 대중정서가 진하게 새겨져 있다. 이런 특성은 코미디가 시대적 의미를 분석하는 좋은 자원이 될 수 있음을 뜻한다. 이 논문은 한국 코미디 형성기 작품들 속에 나타난 역사적 상황과 그 의미를 분석하여, 한국의 근대성의 특성을 파악하고자 하였다. 신불출의 ‘태극기 만담’, 강홍식의 번안 만요 ‘유쾌한 시골영감’, 서영춘의 ‘인천 앞바다에 사이다가 떴어도’, 구봉서의 ‘김 수한무’ 등 네 편의 작품을 저본으로 삼아 그 속에 담긴 한국의 근대성에 대해 분석하였다. 그 결과 근대의 충격, 분단의 질곡, 재담의 자원, 일본문화의 번안 등 네 가지 범주 특성을 파악하였다.
The social situation and popular sentiment are deeply engraved in comedy. This characteristic means that comedy can be a good resource to analyze the meaning of the times. This thesis attempts to understand the characteristics of Korea's modernity by analyzing the historical situation and its meaning in the works of the formative period of Korean comedy. The characteristics of modernity were analyzed using the four works as the manuscripts including Shin Bulchul's ‘Taegeukgi Comics’, adaptation comic song ‘A Rural Grandpa’s Tour of Seoul', Seo Young-chun’s ‘Even if cider floats in the sea off Incheon’, and Gu Bong-seo’s ‘Kim Suhanmu’. As a result, four characteristics were identified: the shock of modern times, the bitterness of division, the resources of witty words, and the adaptation of Japanese culture.
