인간이 촉발한 코로나19 바이러스의 세계적 확산은 현대문명을 한계 상황 으로 몰아가고 있다. 아노미 상태에 처한 인류의 위기에 종교계의 역할이 중요 해지고 있다. 특히 물질문명의 한계를 돌파하고자 나온 원불교야말로 큰 책임 을 지고 있다. 한 세기 전에 인류 구제의 서원(誓願)을 세워 하늘로부터 그 사명 을 인증 받은 법인기도(法認祈禱)의 정신을 오늘날 절망의 인류를 향해 더욱 확 장시키고, 사회적 실천의 방향을 새롭게 모색할 필요가 있다. 이를 위해 원불교 구성원들은 대승(大乘)의 서원을 다시 확인할 필요가 있 다. 법인정신은 희생제의를 통해 확립된 정신이며, 이에 따라 원불교는 인류 를 구제하는 종교운동을 표방한 것이다. 그 기원은 보살도를 실천하는 대승불 교의 사홍서원(四弘誓願)이다. 총원(總願)인 이 사홍서원에 의거, 다양한 별원(別 願)이 경전에 나타난다. 법인정신은 이러한 서원을 현대적으로 계승했다고 할 수 있다. 이러한 원불교 신앙의 혁신성은 범재신론(汎在神論, panentheism)적 신앙과도 상통한다. 법신불 일원상(法身佛 一圓相) 신앙과 사은(四恩) 신앙, 그리고 처처불 (處處佛) 신앙을 통해 우리 안의 불성에 대한 확신, 인과의 진리에 대한 믿음, 모 든 존재에 대한 불공으로 세계를 극락정토로 만들자는 것이 원불교 신앙의 궁 극적인 지점이다. 이를 통해 신앙의 사회화가 이루어져야 한다. 그 핵심은 불법에 기반한 신앙의 원초성을 회복하는 것, 불안한 현대 문명을 구제하기 위한 정의와 평화의 구축이다. 인류의 불평등, 불의, 부조리의 구조를 정견(正見)하 고, 잘못된 현실을 바루기 위한 적극적인 사회 참여가 이루어져야 한다. 오늘 날 원불교의 존재 의미는 현대 사회의 병맥을 치유하기 위한 법인정신을 재현 하는 것에 있다.

The worldwide spread of COVID-19 triggered by humankind has driven human civilization toward a critical situation. In anomie of human society, the religious world’s roles are important. Especially, Won Buddhism which was created to break through the limit of material civilization has a great responsibility. The spirit of prayers for the dharma authentication (法認祈禱) that calling was certified by heaven by building great vows (誓願) for saving mankind more than 100 years ago needs to be more expanded toward mankind of despair today and the direction of social practice needs to be newly sought. For this, great vows of Mahāyāna (大乘) should be established again. Won Buddhism is the religious movement which saves mankind with the spirit established through collective sacrificial rites. The origin of the great vows is the Four Great Vows (四弘誓願) of Mahāyāna Buddhism which practices the Way of Bodhisattva. There are several specific vows (別願) in the scriptures based on this Four Great Vows, the universal vow (總願). The spirit of Beobin inherited these vows modernistically. Innovation of Won Buddhism belief which inherited the spirit of Mahāyāna Buddhism has something in common with belief from the viewpoint of panentheism (汎在神論). The ultimate point of Won Buddhism belief is to make the world the Utmost Bliss of the Pure Land by a conviction about Buddhist nature, belief in the truth of cause and effect, and a ceremonial offering to Buddha about all beings through Dharma-kāya Buddha as One Circle (法身佛 一圓相), the The Fourfold Grace (四恩) belief, and Cheocheobul (處處佛). Socialization of belief should be done through this. The methods are to recover the original nature of belief based on the Buddha-dharma and build justice and peace for rebuilding unstable modern civilization. Won Buddhists should do samyag-dṛṣṭi (正見) of the unequal, unjust, and irrational structure of mankind and correct wrong reality. Like this, the meaning of Won Buddhism’s existence today is to realize the spirit of Beobin to solve problems of modern society.
