천복승고(薦福承古)의 선사상은 각범혜홍(覺範惠洪)의 『선림승보전』을 통해 비판적 시선으로 이해되면서 온전히 평가되지 못했다. 『천복승고선사어록』을 중심으로 재검토하면 그의 문제의식은 무심을 강조하고 본분사와 활구를 구분하는 데 방점이 있다. 천복승고는 북송대 선종에서 성행하던 활구가 언어를 조작하는 폐단을 벗어나지 못하고 있다고 비판하면서 본분사를 체득한 무심과 구분했고 이를 위해 삼현을 재구성했다. 천복승고는 삼현은 양종자기와 긴밀하게 연결된다. 현재의 자기에 해당하는 체중현(교학)과 구중현(선학)은 모두 유심(有心)에, 현중현은 공겁이전의 자기로서 무심(無心)에 각각 상응한다. 공겁이전의 자기와 현재의 자기를 무심과 유심으로 구분하고 전자를 향상의 극칙으로 규정한 것이다. 그러나 각범혜홍은 문자와 언어가 활용되는 현재의 자기를 공겁이전의 경지와 구분하지 않았다. 천복승고가 무심을 강조하기 위해 공겁이전과 현재를 구분했던 반면 혜홍에게는 대용현전의 본분사가 실현되는 곳이 현재와 다름이 없다는 관점을 확보하는 것이 중요했다. 이 차이가 혜홍과 승고의 문제의식이 분기하는 지점이다. 천복승고의 관점은 임제종 황룡파 영원유청과 양기파 대혜종고의 문제의식으로 계승되었으며 남송대 간화선의 방법론을 정립하는 계기를 마련했다. 결과적으로 활구와 본분사는 동등한 위상을 갖추게 되었지만 이에 앞서 천복승고의 문제의식을 통해 활구와 무심은 새로운 활력을 확보할 수 있었다.
In the Northern Song Dynasty, Master Jianfu Chenggu薦福承古 criticized that the Yuanmen雲門 school’s masters were obsessed with words and phrases, contrary to the fundamental teaching of Yuanmen to which he was a direct successor. A widespread perception at that time was that ultimate enlightenment could be achieved by way of enlightenment through language. Jianfu Chenggu insisted that while realization through crucial phrase活句 has the advantage of solving problems related to Buddhist truth at the linguistic level, it is not the ultimate stage but still a state of language manipulation. From this point of view, a unique perspective on Three Misteries and Three Essentials三玄三要 emerged, which explains the practicing crucial phrase in an incomplete stage and recognizes the mindlessness無心 as the best realization. However, this problem has not been understood through the Jianfu Chenggu chanshi yulu薦福承古禪師語錄 until now but has been understood in a refracted form through Juefan Huihong覺範惠洪's Chanlin sengbao zhuan禪林僧寶傳, which belongs to the critical camp. Reviewing the three issues raised by Huihong through the Jianfu Chenggu Chanshi Yulu opens up a new possibility to understand the problematics of Zen Buddhism during the transition period from northern Song to southern Song and from Huanglong黃龍 to Yangqi sect楊岐 of Linji臨濟 school more correctly.
