본 연구는 원귀를 소재로 삼고 있는 다양한 고전소설 개별 작품을 원귀형 고전소설이라는 범주로 일반화하여 이들 작품의 서사 문법과 그 특징을 분석하는 것을 목적으로 시도되었다. 이를 통해 원귀형 고전소설이 지니는 의미를 고찰하면서 당대의 인식과 사회상, 나아가 이 속에서 발견할 수 있는 의의와 한계점 등을 조망하고자 하였다. 이에 14편의 고전소설을 연구대상으로 선정하여 첫째, 각 작품에 드러난 공통점과 차이점을 분석하고 이를 토대로 원귀형 고전소설의 서사 문법과 유형적 특징을 도출하였다. 연구 결과, 고난의 원인과 죽음에 이르는 과정에서 차이가 발생하나 ‘여주인공의 함원→죽음→원귀→해원’이라는 공통된 서사 문법을 따르고 있음을 파악할 수 있었다. 둘째, 이러한 서사 문법을 구축하는 서사의 논리와 요소를 고난, 죽음, 해원의 단계로 세분화하여 각각의 특징이 무엇이고, 그 속에 내포된 의미가 무엇인지를 규명하고자 하였다. 셋째, 이러한 서사 과정 및 의미 분석을 통해 당대 문제 상황의 폭로와 잠정적 봉합의 서사에서 발견되는 원귀형 고전소설의 의미와 한계를 고찰할 수 있었다. 원귀형 고전소설은 문제 가정이 속해 있는 당대 사회의 구조적 문제를 재현한다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 그러나 이러한 문제의 해결은 단지 악인의 처벌과 원귀의 재생을 통해 이루어진다. 이에 문제 상황을 비판적으로 말하려 했던 원귀는 일차적 폭로만을 하고서 다시 당대 사회의 구조 속으로 편입된다는 한계를 지닌다.
This study was attempted to generalize various classical novels based on the original into the category of classical novels about ghosts and to analyze their narrative grammar and their characteristics. Through this, while considering the meaning of such classical novels about Ghosts, we tried to look at examined the perceptions and social aspects of the times they were written, as well as furthermore, the significance and limitations that can be found in them. Accordingly, 17 classical novels were selected as research subjects. and first, the commonalities and differences revealed in of each work were analyzed, and their narrative grammar and tangible characteristics of classical novels about ghosts were derived identified. As a result of the study, it was found that there were differences occurred in the process of that lead sing to the cause of hardship and death of the ghost. However, but they followed the common narrative grammar of “’the heroine’’s Resentment → Death → Ghost → Solution’.” Second, through these this narrative grammar and the analysis of the novels’ tangible characteristics, it was possible to consider the meaning and limitations of the classical ghost novels about ghosts that are found in the narrative of the disclosure and provisional solution of the problem situation of the time could be considered. These classical novels about ghosts are meaningful in that they it reproducing the structural problems of the society of their time to which the problem assumption belongs. However, this problem is resolved only through the punishment of the wicked and the regeneration of the ghost. Accordingly, the ghosts who tried to critically say reveal the problematic situation, had the limitation in that it is of being incorporated into the structure of society of the time only after making only the primary disclosure.
