The purpose of this research is to examine the income and income distributional effects of the public direct payment system that was newly introduced in 2020. The major findings are as follows. First, in terms of income effects under price uncertainty, the results from the Monte Carlo simulation for rice agriculture support that the public direct payment system has positive effects on farm income if the market price is maintained at 176, 515 won/80kg or higher. In the meanwhile, both expected income and income stability of rice farmers were decreased compared to the previous direct payment program. Second, the analysis of the Gini coefficients for paddy fields show that the public direct payment system has positive effects on income distribution, although to a lesser extent than the previous direct payment scheme. On the other hand, in the case of upland fields, positive results were obtained showing that the public direct payment system leads to a higher income distributional effects than the former counterpart.
