BL(Boys’ Love)은 주로 여성이 창작하고 소비하는 장르이다. 한국에서 BL은 유료 플랫폼이 생겨나기 전까지 동인 문화의 일부로 존재했다. 그러나 최근에는 동인지로 나왔던 인기 작품 상당수가 e-Book으로 출간되거나 웹툰화 했고 많은 유료 웹툰·웹소설 플랫폼에서 BL은 주요 콘텐츠가 되었다. 하지만 선행연구는 많지 않다. BL에 관한 체계적인 연구가 필요한 이유이다. 본 논문에서는 BL의 의미, 특히 여성 독자가 BL을 소비하는 이유에 관해 한국과 일본의 선행연구를 분석한다. BL의 외연 확장을 위해 BL의 장르적 특징과 존재 이유를 정확히 파악할 필요가 있기 때문이다. 그리고 일본에서 BL 장르가 대중화하는 과정을 고찰하고 한국 BL 장르의 미래를 위한 제언을 시도한다. 한국의 BL은 일본에서 BL이 대중적 장르로 성립해가는 과정과 상당히 유사한 궤적을 가지고 변화했기 때문이다. BL이 비슷한 플롯의 반복, 성애묘사를 우선하는 빈약한 서사, 양적인 팽창에만 치우친 성장 등으로 소비자의 외면을 받게 되면 장르는 소멸하거나 쇠퇴할 것이다. 따라서, 장르의 완성과 지속을 위해 새로운 활력과 다양성에 대해 고민할 필요가 있다. 본 논문에서 독자들이 BL을 소비하는 다양한 이유를 분석한 결과 BL의 본질이 성적인 묘사에 있는 것이 아님을 알 수 있었다. 결론적으로, 성 표현보다는 짜임새 있는 서사를 기반으로 하는 우수한 작품과 작가가 더 늘어나고 더 다양한 OSMU 등을 통해 BL의 저변을 확대하는 것으로 대중성을 획득해야 한다.
BL(Boys’ Love) is a genre which is made and consumed by mostly women creators and consumers. Before paid platforms, the stories of male homosexual were present as the part of coterie magazine cultures in Korea. However, recently a large amount of popular works which were in coterie magazines were published as a form of e-book or webtoon, and BL has become a major content in many webtoon and web novel platform which is pay-per-view. Nevertheless, there has not been many preceding research on it. That is why it is necessary to study BL systematically. This paper analyzes South Korea and Japan’s preceding research on the meanings of BL, particularly on the reasons why women readers consume BL. Because we need to accurately understand the generic characteristics and reason for being of BL for external extension of it. In addition, this article examines the process that BL genre has become widespread in Japan, and attempts a suggestion for future of Korean BL genre. The reason why we need this kind of study is because it is the similarity between Korea and Japan in terms of the process that BL has been formed as a popular genre in both countries. If BL is ignored by public due to the repetition of similar plots, the poor narrative focusing the description of sex, and the growth leaning toward only quantitative expansion, the genre will be extinct or fall into a decline. Therefore, it is needed to think of a new energy and diversity for the completion and continuity of the genre. This essay found that the essence of BL was not in the representation of sex, after analyzing the various reasons why readers have consumed BL. Consequently, we have to gain popularity by expanding the base of BL through increasing good authors and their works built on well-organized narrative, and a variety of OSMU of them rather than sexual expression.
